In a major terror strike after the November 26, 2008 carnage in Mumbai, nine persons including four foreigners, all women, were killed and over 40 injured in a bomb blast which ravaged the famous German Bakery on North Main Avenue in Pune’s Koregaon Park near the Osho Ashram around 7.30 p.m. on Saturday. Unofficial figures put the number of injured at 50.
The bodies were charred beyond recognition.
An eyewitness who was travelling in an autorickshaw said he heard a loud explosion and blacked out. Another eyewitness said bodies were scattered and more than 10 were seen at the site. Four shops were damaged near the bakery, which has been there for 22 years.
The bag containing the bomb was said to be under a table, according to one account, and a waiter is said to have tried to open it. This caused the explosion which devastated the bakery, located near both the Pune Resort and the Jewish Chabad House.
Sources said the bakery was close to a hotel where Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Headley had stayed while visiting Osho Ashram.
The Indian Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has also reached Pune, apart from forensic experts. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will reach there by Sunday.
The blast has sent shockwaves in Pune, prompting a high alert in Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra. The police have been asked to look out for unattended baggage.
Joint Commissioner of Police Rajendra Sonawane said that prima facie it looked like a bomb blast.
Congress city president Abhay Chhajed confirmed the number of deaths. “I myself have seen six bodies at the Sassoon Hospital. There are more at other hospitals.” He said the injured had been taken to Ruby Hall, Jehangir, Budhrani and Sassoon hospitals in the city.
The bakery is a popular spot with sannyasins. Six or eight of the injured are said to be foreign nationals.
Mr. Chavan has announced ex gratia payment of Rs. 1 lakh to each of the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured.
Security for the Indian and South African cricket teams has been tightened. The second test match is beginning in Kolkata on Sunday.
Pune MP Suresh Kalmadi said: “I appeal to the people of Pune to be calm. Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe, who is at the site, has confirmed to me that it was bomb blast. Further details are awaited.

What an ugly happening to bring back memories of that particular corner of Koregoan Park. The reports say the German Bakery has been there for 22 years; more like 32 years isn’t it? I remember it from ’79/80.
Our biggest fear in those days was the Hindu fanatics who threatened to attack the Ashram with a crack team of martial arts combatants. At least there could have been a fair fight had that ever occured!
Amongst the ruins of the German Bakery in the news i see a picture of Osho standing there. I wonder what he would say in discourse about this event. I do miss his fearlessness

IT IS VERY SAD WHAT HAPPENED IN GERMAN BAKERY….. IT IS SAD BECAUSE I KNOW MOST OF PEOPLE WHO GO THERE TO EAT AND DRINK TEA OR COFEE WERE NICE AND IT WAS MEETING ;PLACE FOR THEM TO MEET THEIR LOVER AND BELOVED OR FRIEND.
I MYSELF USED TO HANG OUT THERE AFTER EVENING MEETING AND OFTEN TAKE GINGER TEA AND WALNUT CAKE . AND ATMOSPHERE WAS EVEN BETTER IN BREAKFAST TIME. I HAVE SEEN MANY TIMES SOME SANYASINS CLOSING THEIR EYES AND DOING MEDITATION IN THE MIDDLE OF DAY DURING BUSY TIME. IT WAS VERY WONDERFUL PLACE . Amano, I hope your friend is alright and not hurt… Thanks you Punam for your courage…. Now true growth can happen. Without coming face to face with all of those fears and the negative side in all of our minds, and all of that denying… meditation is a waste of time, but it’s your time, use it as you like… Stop the pretending….. Start the healing, start the growing.
This disgusting act of violence can be one of two things to those of us lovers of Osho. Either it can be a zen stick to the head or another chance to avoid the truth. Sannyasins are also creatures of habit… and avoiding the truth has been THE game played in the past and still is by most… prove me wrong somebody!!!!
There might be a chance for the loacal residents and merchants including the resort(they are merchants, by the way). to form what we call here in the states a “neighborhood watch”. the people get together and either volunteer and/or hire locals to stroll around and keep a mindful eye on things… Wow the local indian minister said people should report all unattended baggage. What a genius!!! how long did it take for him to come up with that one… It’s old news pal!!! The Indian clock does tick a lot slower than the rest of the modern world… shake off that dust from your brain, minister and get hip, get with the program!!! GEEZZZZ!!!!! And i thought the hillbillies here were slow!!! Anymore bright ideas, minister? What’s that? You’ve got to go to the resort to meditate first? Just flash your badge they’ll send you right in without any security check, cause you’ve got clout!!! I would think with all of those billions of dollars Jayesh has, he could really create not only a safe “Resort” but a safe community as well.. Too cheap I guess to care.. he doesn’t even care to provide SAFE, clean water for visitors to drink.. I am very sorry about what happened in Pune, in the German Bakery. It is a shame. Does somebody knows about the Indian Swami Amano (Rajendra Kalokhe). He used to be in German Bakery,when I was in Pune in 2005 and before.

Our friend went to meet Nadia that day and believe it or not could not find her (she must have been late or went to the loo), so he left German Bakery. In a few minutes an explosion! He heard it as he was walking….and ran back to see the tragedy…

What is not clear for me why German Bakery? First of all it is not a RESTAURANT but hardly a cafe for weird people. In the even it is full of prostitutes and drug dealers. It cannot be a tourist place, common.

Without doubt German Bakery was one of the softest target for the terror creators. I cannot imagine any other place in Maharashtra where so many young Indians on their first job and westners for their crash course on spirituality sit hip to hip in a congested atmoshphare.
One really wonders why the owners who have milked hell of the money from this gheto kind of shop did nothing about the preventive security other than one guard taking care of dogs, beggers and moter bikes.
