It was a rare sight that the main gates of an Osho commune were guarded with some of the most experienced and highly trained security men of the country along with the media persons from all channels and newspapers. The traffic on the Balaju to Tapoban highway had been blocked for security reasons. As sannyasins at Tapoban were in their third stage of Dynamic meditation in the Buddha hall, the commune flocked with groups of commandos, sniffing dogs, special police force, military chiefs and ADCs who had come to ensure the security inside the commune premises.
For the first time in history, an Osho commune was being visited by The President, The Prime-Minister, The Cabinet of ministers and many other VIPs of the country. The auspicious occasion was to mark the 86th birthday of Former- Prime-Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and the inauguration of Tapoban’s first Hindi magazine.

On 13th December, as the guests started to arrive, the long list of VVIPs included President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Former-Prime minister and Maoist Party Chairman Prachanda, Acting President of Nepal Congress Sushil Koirala, Nepal Congress Parliamentarian leader Ram Chandra Paudel, Former-Prime Ministers Surya Bahadur Thapa, Lokendra Bahadur Chand and Kirtinidhi Bista, Former Commander in Chief of Nepal Army Rookmangad Katuwal and two hundred other VIPs, diplomats and foreign ambassadors.

Regarding the contemporary political scenario of Nepal also, this was a historic event for the stakeholders of Nepalese politics. After the resignation of Maoist Chief Prachanda from the post of Prime Ministership a year ago, this was the first time that all these leaders were seen together at the same public function. Speaking during the function, Maoist Chief Prachanda said, “I look upon Kishun jee as a real democrat and I am thankful to Tapoban for organizing this meeting and giving me an opportunity to come here. Very few people know that during my student years, Osho’s books were the ones that I read the most. Communism and Osho complement each other.”
President Ram Baran Yadav who had been willing to come to Tapoban since a long time and had expressed this desire with Swami Arun called on for peace and said, “Let all the parties move together and let the peace prevail.” The president also lauded the contribution made by Bhattarai for the democracy movement in Nepal. “He dedicated all his life fighting for democracy,” he said.
Likewise, speaking at the function Prime-Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal said that maybe it’s because Kishunjee frequents Tapoban so much that he has such a clean personality. After entering the commune premises he had said, “I had heard that Tapoban was doing a very good work and many foreigners come here and stay for months. Now that I am here I don’t feel like going back at all.” After inquiring about the commune and its programs he requested that he should be invited frequently and that he would love to come and participate. He further added that the peaceful environment at Tapoban could inspire all political leaders to take a peaceful path.
During the program Tapoban also launched its first hindi magazine titled, Osho Tapoban which was released by Krishna Prasad Bhattarai along with Yes! Osho and Osho World that are published from India.

It may or may not have been “politics” with a small p, but this sort of thing that Arun is doing is not so off-key with the way that Osho himself behaved in this regard. The posters here could not have been around in Pune when Osho was alive, otherwise their comments would not be so absurd.
A number of “celebrities”, film stars, authors, actors, etc and local politicians, etc visited the ashram during those times and were well looked after.
One Indian sannyasin who was a film star at the time subsequently served as a politician at Cabinet level in the Indian government.
And have you seen that Maoist leader who basically got rid of the old order in Nepal dance? There is a wonderful 70 second clip of him dancing on u-tube. He sure is in touch with himself.

about Indira Gandhi and the Pune 1 Ashram…
i just listened to a tape recently by Osho discussing just that subject for nearly 15 minutes…his conclusion was that she didn’t come because her advisors advised against it, yes, for security, but not physical security–political security was Osho’s conclusion. She had too much too lose politically to be associated in any way with Osho and his Ashram in the 70′s. And they were most likely correct. A Midsummer Night’s Dream? Sweet, but surely not having anything to do with The Man’s wild and radical brew of Pune 1…

Everyone else: there is something certainly happening within Nepal, and its beautiful. People are meditating, dancing, singing and being “happy” too through Osho Tapoban. They aint selling drugs nor charging rediculous entrance fees nor hiding Osho from an Osho Meditation Center!
Atleast, this event safeguards Tapoban’s survival in Nepal and may very well bring thousands more into it! Its like people who only heard “sex” during the early 70s when they heard of Osho, and came running! Now they’ll see these monkey politicians, and will come running!!

Politicians will seldom come to meditate (although some have come..) but people from all over Nepal and around the world know about Tapoban. Osho is more accepted among people than ever (at least in Nepal). Those who love to criticize will never stop, be it a politician or a monk.

I wud like to correct this record, as I lived in Osho commune pune 1974-81 years. Indira Gandhi never visited, though she wanted to visit. she was in touch with Ma Laxmi, Osho’s secretary. But Indira Gandhi’s adviiser Pupul Jayakar who was J Krishnamurti’s disciple advised Indira against meeting Osho.
Osho talks about it in Hindi discourses.
Earlier Osho had met Indira Gandhi in Delhi, a few hours before she sacked Morar ji Desai. And Morar ji blamed Osho for this sacking, thinking that she did this on Osho’s advice.
Osho did praise Indira, and criticised her also.
Osho is against political mind, nut as he is not against them as persons or humna beings.
Down the centuries all Enlightened ones in India had the kings and politicians as their disciples, Buddha Mahavira, Krishna and Upanishdic Rishis all.
So don’t be in a hurry to condemn everybody.
Osho even welcomed a city mayor of Pune when he came back after his world tour.

An excerpt from Osho discourse, Indira in the context of Sheela:
The tomorrow is open. All the dimensions are open. You can choose anything, and there are instances where murderers have changed and become great saints. This proves the freedom of man.
So when I had chosen Sheela to be my secretary, my reasons were: the secretary has to be pragmatic, practical in worldly affairs, because she will be taking care of the commune. And she will have to manage the commune amidst a world… she has to be alert and aware about worldly ways.
She was not very educated, she had no university degree — she has been a waitress in a hotel in America — but I did not want a very intellectual person to be my secretary, because the intellectual person will destroy my messages by his intellect. And I wanted just a parrot — and she was good at doing it.
But the future is open.
I went into silence. The direct communication between me and you stopped; she became the only communication. She saw the opportunity, the great opportunity that you love me so much and you trust me so much that whatever message she brings from me you believe it.
That gave her a clue that you can be exploited, that she can bring any message to you which I have not given. She can change the message and you will trust totally and do it accordingly. That’s why for three and a half years you simply remained unaware of what she was doing. And power has a strange quality. It brings all your hidden desires to the surface. That’s why power corrupts.
It is not power that really corrupts, it only brings all the corrupted ideas in you to the surface, because power gives you an opportunity to give those ideas a reality. Those dreams can be transformed and materialized.
And everybody is full of so many unconscious desires, of which he himself is not aware. Only power will show. And it has been happening all through history.
When Indira Gandhi came to power in India she was innocent, intelligent, not political at all. She had not come from the lowest political levels, fighting, struggling and reaching to the top. That way one becomes very cunning, clever, experienced. She had just got the power because she was the daughter of the first prime minister of India. So she never moved through the power struggle. She had never dreamed about it, she had never thought about it. Her father had never mentioned it.
But the committee, who was to decide, was in a very difficult position. There was Morarji Desai — who was strong, adamant, stubborn and a perfect idiot. Once he gets into power, he is not going even to listen to the committee who appoints him. And he will do all kinds of stupidities, and there will be no way to prevent him.
And there were others, but they were all provincial leaders. Only Morarji’s and Indira’s names were national names — Indira’s because she was the daughter of Jawaharlal, and had followed Jawaharlal his whole life, taken care of her father because her mother died very early. And she sacrificed everything for the father. She sacrificed her own husband, abandoned her own husband, because she could not serve these two masters.
So it was thought that Indira will be good. She is innocent, not political, has never shown any political lust, has never tried to take advantage of her father’s position. It will be good to put her against Morarji Desai, because her father had so much respect and love that certainly she will be chosen.
And she was chosen. But once she got into power, things started changing. She became almost a dictator at one point.
She imposed an emergency on the whole country. She forced all the political people into jail. She did whatever she wanted. She dissolved the parliament. She went on postponing the elections. And this was the natural result of all her dictatorial methods — that she has been assassinated by her bodyguards.
But nobody had any idea that a woman could turn into an Adolf Hitler.
The same happened in this small commune. You were engaged in creating an oasis in the desert, I was living in isolation and silence — and she had the gap between the two. You were engaged in the work so much, and I was out of contact with you.
I have never been in any power position in my whole life, and I will never be, because I know something bigger than power. I know something more powerful than power.
I know love.
I know trust.
And I love unconditionally, and I trust unconditionally. And I love and trust even those who are strangers, even those who have done things against me.

I know about Indira Gandhi in India. She was very much interested in my ideas — we had a few meetings. She told me, “My power consists in having a few files.”
I said, “I don’t understand. What do you mean?”
She said, “I have files against each politician who can be a competitor to me, and he knows that I will immediately expose him before the public, before the court. Rather than becoming the prime minister, he will be behind bars.”
Those files now are in the hands of her son, Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi was never in politics, but those files are enough: all old politicians are silent, knowing perfectly well that they can be caught and exposed. They have committed every kind of crime.
You will be surprised… when Indira Gandhi’s son, Sanjay Gandhi, had an accident and died — his plane crashed just near Indira Gandhi’s house, two blocks away — Indira Gandhi rushed there immediately. Naturally, you would think a mother would rush immediately; her son has died. But what she inquired was, “He had some keys with him — where are those keys?” She had not rushed there for Sanjay Gandhi, she had rushed there for those two keys, because those two keys were to all the files containing all the papers against all the Indian politicians.
In fact, it seems she felt relieved by Sanjay Gandhi’s death, because Sanjay Gandhi was harassing her. It is a well-known fact all over the country — there are eyewitnesses — that once Sanjay Gandhi slapped Indira Gandhi. And it was an everyday thing, they were fighting continuously, because he wanted all those files. Finally, just to keep the peace, she had given him the keys. His death came as a relief; the keys were back with her.

Then will it not be a wise course that India declares itself an international country? that we drop the boundaries, we drop the whole idea that you have to come with a permit into the country, that you need a passport? No, we just open the whole country for the whole world. Whoever wants to come is welcome. We are so poor that we cannot be more poor.
“But this will be a precedent and this will be a historical moment: one country declaring that it is no longer a nation, that it belongs to the whole world.
“Anyway you cannot win against China, you cannot win against Russia or America. When you cannot win why not take some other course? Declare, ‘We are defenseless, we dissolve our defense forces, we send our soldiers to the fields, to the factories. We are no longer in the game of war; we drop out of it.”‘

I said, “Anybody can attack now — what difference does it make? In fact, then to attack India will become difficult because there will be a worldwide condemnation. A country who declares itself defenseless, drops its arms and goes to the fields and the factories, welcomes everybody who wants to come, to invest, to bring industries, to do anything…. It will be almost impossible for anybody to attack India because the whole world will be against that attacker.
“You will have so much sympathy and so many friends that nobody will dare. Right now anybody can attack you. And you have been attacked by China already; China already occupies thousands of miles of land and India has not even the guts to raise the question, ‘Please return that land.”‘
Indira’s father, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, said, “That land is useless, not even grass grows there.” I wrote him a letter, saying, “If not even grass grows there and it is useless, why did you go to war in the first place? You should have told the Chinese, ‘You can occupy as much as you can. Not even grass grows. If you can manage to grow something, good, because for us it is useless anyway. We give it to you as a gift.’
“That would have been more gentlemanly — to give it to them as a gift, rather than to be defeated. Why did you go to war? Did you come to know it later on — that no grass grows there, that it is wasteland?
“You can be attacked,” I told Indira. “You have been attacked, so your arms and your armies don’t help. Even the biggest powers have been attacked. We have seen even a powerful nation like Germany defeated, a powerful nation like Japan defeated. We know that for five years Germany went on defeating all big nations, so you don’t count.
“If you accept my suggestion you come out on top; you prove really wise in the true sense of the word. And you prove that it is not only a saying that India is a country of wisdom; you will prove by this act that you are certainly wise. Where you cannot win, the best way is to drop the whole idea of any fight.”

OK. keeping in mind the historical records, in early nineties during the tenure of Tathagat as ashram in charge, than sitting Prime Minister of India, late Chander Shekhar has visited the ashram.
Public relation team of the ashram, keerti was also part of this, did a tremendous job to introduce Osho to the creme of Indian society.
“Friends of Osho” banner was created, i think as per Osho´s instructions. few of the best artists, singers, poets have performed during the celebration days.
May be it will hurt the fragile ego of western disciples, but one should not forget Osho´s roots were very much in the Indian soil, yet branches were touching the whole world, and who does not want to be approved by their target audience in their home land, the real acknowledgment and recognition and satisfaction comes from the people of the soil.
Here it will not be in appropriate to mention that Tathagat ( i gave him the name Saddam Hussein) the ” branded thief ” by the military court of Jayesh was fired publically, exactly in the style, Bush Blair team did with the real Saddam.
And as a observer one could also see the jealousy on the faces of those elites of the ashram, who could not play the prominent role before the people, therefore ” friends of Osho” banner went also in the garbage bin with the celebrations.

right Amitabh, there is surely nothing wrong with a politician going to an Osho center, but it looks like those Nepalese politicos did not go to do Dynamic Meditation or watch an Osho video, or buy some books, or participate in some groups. It looked like a well staged standard political photo-op, everyone snapping their digital cameras, 5-minute speeches, leis around the necks for proper greeting protocol, and then back in the cars, with the security contingent scanning the crowd with squinty eyes, before the motorcade takes off again for Kathmandu. Job done.
But of course, behind the scenes, who knows what occurred…only the people who designed and produced the event know that. What we see is only the surface level media PR. Standard fare in the world of Osho, and the world of no-Osho too…

If that ain’t floundering, then I don’t know what is. You might want to give an ear to Bubbie, and learn the benefits of transparency, honesty, and all the rest that he talks about…If you’re broke, just admit it. I do.
Many newpapers in the States are folding just because of these reasons. And the internet. If you can get something immediate, and free, and have an instantaneous post globally, who needs the slow train from Brownsville, with a lead-time of months to publication. Who sends a letter in the mail anymore?
And to your second query…

I had read most of those jokes, in one form or another, in American joke books by the time I was 15 years old. Almost all compiled by American Jews.

The most revealing part of it was that Osho did meet Indira Gandhi at her own residence, so he certainly did not block her interest in him just because she was a politician. Also I remember, as you do, that Osho met the Mayor of Poona (in 1987?) so what Arun is doing is not so off key if judged by his own Master – whatever the Prem Bubbles of this world think.

to address your question, Bubbie, on whether Headley, the so-called terrorist, should be allowed in an Osho Center, I would say, yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
My view is Headley is simply a US/Global government agent. Never took part in any terrorism. At the end of the day he just has a few beers with his bro’s at the local police bar in Chicago, laughin’ it up at the whole joke. So, yes, let ‘im in. Police guys could make good sannyasins. In fact, many of the real undercover CIA sannyasins might be closer to Osho than the normal sannyasins that came to the master for other individual reasons — and there are many (reasons, that is).
As to the Nepal situation, with the so-called “Maoist” group, that could very well be a hoax very similar to the Islamic “terrorist” thing that is being propagated by the global media in the last decade. I recently looked back a few years and read many sannyasnews stories; before they allowed comments to be posted; as I went from story to story an epiphany happened. Since the ranch days of Rajneesh Times, until the present sannyasnews, most stories have been about sannyasins who became “successful “, about this person becoming a tv director, another, some sort of group leader, so on and so forth. I even came upon a web story last year about german so- called sannyasin movie director named Marcus Nispel. What dawned on me was that story after story it was about some schmuck yelling out, “Look everyone, I’m a success”!!! “Look what I learned from living on the ranch”!! Now what ever happened to taking Osho’s advice, advice that he repeated constantly… about being a nobody, about not letting society exploit you? Reigning in the ego…meditativeness, awareness, love? I guess it went the way of Osho’s request that after he died, for us to walk away, find another master…. Sannyasins have seemed to have picked his easiest advice to take.. like burning his body after his death, setting up a circle of 15 to oversee the ashram operations. Doing those things required no more effort than wiping one’s own ass!!! The real successful sannyasin in my opinion is the one who is unsuccessful. No gloating, or smugness, not being a pompous ass. How can being a succesfull tv director or producer or being an advertising executive be a positive? To me those professions are a half step above politician or religious leader. Did so many sannyasins learn from their time on the ranch or pune for that matter, the art of deception , coercion, manipulation… or the art of sucking cash out of another person’s pocket and into their own? Giving the current headlines and posts I think so. What happened to, giving one’s energy to repairing all the damage we have done to the earth and other lifeforms… What happened to living life in simplicity, sincerity, and awareness with our actions? Making tons of money is not a success, whether done by creating Ponzi schemes, tarot card reading, bribing government officials, selling some New Age cancer cure….the list is endless and all either pioneered or used by most sannyasins so they can be successful “in other sannyasins eyes”!!!! Movie director Marcus Nispel, don’t remember his sannyas name, became a success by directing slasher films. Now how contrary to Osho’s vision is that… All of that energy used to further promote vicious violence… Something is wrong here when all that meditating done on his part, all that love supposedly absorbed from Osho goes to making films about insane violence!!! That’s being real meditative of you, Marcus!!! Is this your ego’s claim to fame? Is this what you really care about, your hollywood success? Nispel is well known in hollywood as the “manifesto guru”. real S.O.B. dictator as reported by actors who have worked for him. Do most Germans have Brain Receptors defect? I wonder. Sannyasnews can do a great deal to promote sannyas growth and expose the hypocisy of the sannyasin community. In addition, One swami who claimed success after the ranch said that working in security helped him with what is important and what is not important…. There were all sorts of renegades in Pune one, people who had no where else to go, and also for that matter Alok many who thought that groups were just jerking off, and never went near them, but lived by the river and just came for the discourses. It is not clear who or what Prem Bubble stands for. She or he is certainly very angry about something. I agree with Bubbie that first generation Western sannyasins are a very odd bunch indeed. Not all, but many of them.
I remember one lady who took up “Nutritional Healing.” She would say straightfaced “All illnesses can be cured with the correct nutrition.” Now everyone knows this is nonsense, but she was never challenged in the sannyas world. You see this sort of thing a lot.

Is the Osho world keeping pace with this torrent, or is it backsliding day by day into obscurity? Most sannyasins never had children, as to Osho’s wishes, and they are not much of the missionary bent, so it’s not to hard to see that there is definitely a problem here.

There are only about 200 ( to keep the math simple) countries in the world. If Osho Tapoban is able to spark off the wild fire in Nepal ( and also in few other countries to some extent) , we only need 199 such organisations to get the job done , right? What is important is Tapoban is success in Disturbing Our (Specially Sannayasin Arround the world)sleep simply by sitting silently at Himalayan forest in Nepal. The situation in Nepal is a little different than the rest of the world. We are just out of a “almost” civil-war and the government is all messy. There are no big bucks coming for any headquarters of any sort, nor from the Government. All is being done by local people.
But the main point is – more people are being introduced to Osho – who meditate daily, live a disciplined life and new Osho centers are coming up in all major cities – and Osho Tapoban is playing its best role in helping all this. After all self-transformation is the main thing. Having lived there for 3-4 years, I have realized the importance of a commune life.
You can come visit and know for yourself – you will not regret a single moment.
