Open Letter To Friends and Lovers of Osho

Open Letter from the Inner Circle

Friends,

Not another letter about trademark – the mind moans, wanting to look the other way, hoping it will go away.

Sadly for the mind, Osho insists that each and every time his work is attacked or misrepresented, those people, and their comments have to be answered.

There is an attempt being made by Ramateertha and others to convince the world that Osho did not want trademarks, or did not want particular trademarks like the trademark of his name. And that if any such trademarks did happen, Osho was either unaware of it or his instructions to stop such trademarking were ignored by those around him.

Only someone with absolutely zero experience and understanding of the mechanics of Osho’s work could invent the scenario described in the paragraph above.

Osho and his work were attacked with lawsuits literally hundreds of times over the years. In those days it was people who presented themselves as enemies. Today the lawsuits are started by those who present themselves as his friends.

Either way, Osho was very tuned to the minds of men and women, whether they were lawmakers or lawyers, whether the subject was branding or trademark, whether they were “enemies” or “friends.” In fact on the subject of branding Osho was well ahead of his time and understood exactly the value of  a visual/mental association with a quality of experience. For example he arranged for photographs and a video session with him and all the newly named “OSHO” courses in the Osho Multiversity. He specifically asked that everything related to his work be branded with an OSHO, including the Osho Times, all of his Osho Active Meditations, even the Osho Computer Network. He made sure the word Osho was on every building, and when asked to just confirm that the name of the latest pyramid was “Osho House,” he replied, “No, Osho.”

So, here we have Ramateertha, based on one interview from 1986 when trademark was not even mentioned, explaining to the world what Osho did or did not want, did or did not know, on the subject of trademarks. In reality, between that interview and Osho leaving the body, you can count on there being a few hundred business meetings in his room, where Osho discussed and gave clear guidance and direction for the many aspects of his work.

So, the picture you are asked to accept from Ramateertha is of Osho for years carefully scanning through every Osho Times, and every one of his dozens of newly published books, where the trademarking of his name and work is clearly visible, but where he is then so unaware as to miss the trademark and copyright notices. Or if he doesn’t miss them, he forgets to bring it to the attention of his secretaries that he wants them all removed. Or that the secretaries are all in a bizarre conspiracy to deceive Osho. This conspiracy would then include Osho’s lawyers and others, to mislead Osho into thinking that this trademarking – that Ramateertha is so sure Osho didn’t want, but forgot to ask about in his one interview with Osho – didn’t exist!

Such a silly scenario simply reflects ignorance, or a cunning effort to deceive.

The facts are that Osho’s previous name “Rajneesh” was trademarked from the 1970’s and that legal trademark notices were placed on books, magazines, the Rajneesh Times, including the German edition, flyers, and so on. In addition to his name, additional trademark logos were used to brand Osho’s work – the Rajneesh Foundation triangle logo, the flying birds logo, Zorba the Buddha, his signature – all registered as trademarks to brand and to protect the work. His name Rajneesh is an established and protected international trademark since the 70’s.

In addition, there are documents signed by Osho specifically addressing trademarks.

Thus the suggestion that OSHO cannot be trademarked because it is a name is wrong in law, and also clearly not Osho’s opinion as the trademarking of “Rajneesh” shows.

It was Osho himself who name-branded everything related to his work and ensured that the foundation and lawyers took care that the brand was legally registered and formally recognized. In 1989, it was again Osho himself who changed everything in his work to be renamed and re-branded to OSHO and again arranged that the foundation and lawyers take care of the legal formalities.

Osho invented and created the new mark OSHO, requesting specifically that it be added to everything, even if it was not directly coming from him or his work – for example, OSHO Rebalancing and the OSHO Computer Network.

That Osho took considerable pains to ensure that this trademarking continued after he left the body should surprise no one. Especially in the light of Osho’s direction that we change all and every branding name use of Rajneesh to Osho. So the Rajneesh Times becomes the OSHO Times,  Rajneesh Dynamic Meditation becomes OSHO Dynamic Meditation and so on.

In short, Osho instructed that exactly the same legal protection that he arranged in the 1970’s for the name Rajneesh be provided for the name Osho.

Osho explains very clearly that the use of OSHO will expand very quickly and needs protection, as many people will see Osho as an umbrella under which they can place any of their own rubbish. His words!

A letter was sent to the lawyers, dated 28th September 1989 while Osho was still in the body, instructing them to trademark Osho exactly as Osho had asked.

Ramateertha’s idea that trademarking equals religion, which Osho never wanted, and so must also mean that Osho also didn’t want trademarking reveals the need to scrape the bottom of the barrel for any possible argument to try and undo Osho’s obvious wishes. What is so telling about this is that in Ramateertha’s attempts to use the law to overturn Osho’s wishes – and Ramateertha knows very well that these are Osho’s wishes – he uses the exact opposite argument. In his current court filings he claims that there should be no trademark precisely because Osho is a religion, and as such trademarking is not appropriate.

What is particularly interesting about the public interview with Osho in 1986 for the Osho Times is that Ramateertha specifically asks about this mistrust of the process whereby people may again, like Sheela, misrepresent Osho’s wishes. Osho explains in great detail that he will not allow this to happen again, that there will be many doorways to him so he can always be asked directly about whatever you “don’t feel clear about…” That this mistrust “will disappear” and that “you have to clear it now.”

Here we are, nearly 30 years later, and, once again the issue is: is this what Osho is asking for or what I want? That mistrust that Osho is asking Ramateetha to “clear” seems still not yet cleared and seems to be the basis for his whole action against the trademarks on Osho’s work.”

Of course, our concern is not Ramateertha. Our interest is only to properly inform new people who might imagine that people like Ramateertha would know what they were talking about, not knowing that such people might never have had one private conversation in their lives with Osho concerning anything, let alone the intricate legalities of his work.

Ramateertha’s claims that “organism” means that the legs move independently and in different directions from one another in the name of “freedom” is surprising coming from a physician trained in Germany – but shouldn’t be allowed to confuse others that this is Osho understanding of “organism.”

That people are “banned” from the meditation resort, called by Ramateertha “a resort” in quote marks, should surprise no one.

The guidance on this from Osho is very clear. In particular, anyone who spoke or acted publicly against his work was always banned. Even his long time secretary Laxmi was banned by Osho shortly before Osho left the body for speaking and acting against his work. The way back in was always very simple and is still the same: an equally public apology.

As Osho explains, this apology was not for Osho or his place, but for the individual concerned. They could then let go of whatever it was that was fueling their antagonism to Osho and at the same time clear the air with all those who might feel antagonistic to them, so they could start with an absolutely clean sheet.

As Osho makes clear when speaking in his room shortly before leaving the body: There are many people in Buddha Hall tonight who are guru minds and who always know better, who keep their heads down now because they know that if they lift them up I will hit them hard. Once I am gone, those heads will rise. Then you will have to take care.

Naturally, you had to be very foolish or at least foolhardy to attack Osho or his work when he was in the body. Today, suddenly there are so many “lions” with widely publicized opinions about what is right and wrong about the direction for Osho’s work. These same people suddenly seem to know what Osho really wanted, and that this is in some way related to what they want.

If they know so much about Osho’s work, they will also know that when they publicly attack what Osho has put in place, they will be asked to leave the meditation resort until they also fulfill the simple criteria laid out by Osho for their return.

If you are new to Osho you may well wonder why people write “resort” in quote signs. This is a not-very-subtle code for “What happened to my spiritual home called ‘an ashram’? Why have ‘these people’ changed it to a ‘meditation resort’? The word ‘resort’ is so unspiritual, businesslike even.”

Again, the implication, as with the trademark issue above, is that Osho didn’t really know what was going on, let alone that he personally arranged a public meeting in 1989 in the auditorium where exactly this vision for future was spelled out. This was received with obvious delight and laughter, audible on the sound track. You can also sense the disdain from some of the “ashramites” of the time, who could no doubt sense that the description of the plans for a swimming pool and tennis courts, a beauty club and a spa, a gymnasium and a disco in a spiritual Club Med as in meditation, spelled the end of any “spiritual shrine.”

This is really the key to all these endless attacks on Osho’s work: “I don’t actually care what Osho wanted, what I really care about is what I want. I like ‘Ashram.’ I like ‘spiritual.’ I will choose to ignore that Osho wants a place that reflects Zorba and Buddha, where materialism and spirituality are no longer separate: resort and meditation together. I don’t want to hear about the fact that Osho publicly dropped the name “Ashram” in September of 1989. In particular, I like the fantasy that Osho supports everyone to do whatever he or she wants in Osho’s name and calls that freedom.

If you are new to Osho, please be assured that while Osho was in the body, all these fantasies remained repressed in the minds of the people concerned. Who would want their unconscious desires to redirect Osho’s work exposed in a public meeting! Now suddenly there are so many experts on this and that aspect of Osho’s work.

Needless to say, the Osho you know, the one who is so specific in public about the precise source of our anger, jealousies, resentments, and so on, is the same Osho in private. One who is also so specific about critical issues related to his work, and in particular legal issues, including copyright and trademark.

Those who Osho selected to take care of these details continue to do just as he has asked to the very best of their abilities, irrespective of the many alternative views from people other than Osho.

Love,
The Inner Circle

Osho on absurdity of Osho Guidance balloon of OIF church, Pune!

I love my people so much that I cannot create any hindrance in their life in the future.

I cannot give them any instructions.

I am giving them eyes so they can see where the door is for themselves.

Why should I give them a map of the house when the house is continuously changing? And it has been proved by these five thousand years that all codes, all religions, all ethical systems have failed for the simple reason that they were trying to decide the future, which was not in their hands. Their intention was good, but their understanding was not enough……

I want my sannyasins to inherit my freedom, my awareness, my consciousness.

And each sannyasin has to be my successor, has to be me.

There is no need for anybody to dominate.

There is nobody for anybody to dictate to.

      They are on their own.

If they want to be together they can be together.

Out of their own freedom, it is their choice and their decision.

If they want to move free they have all the rights to move free…………

Osho on absurdity of OIF Church, Pune!

Q: THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING THAT ONE. WHAT DO YOU FORESEE AS THE FUTURE OF YOUR SANNYAS MOVEMENT? DO YOU SEE IT AS PROSPERING, EVEN WHEN YOU’RE NOT HERE?

A: Sannyas movement is not mine. It is not yours.

It was here when I was not here.

It will be here when I will not be here.Sannyas movement simply means the movement of the seekers of truth. They have always been here.

Of course, they have been always tortured by the ignorant masses: killed, murdered, crucified, or worshipped.

Remember: it is the same whether you crucify or you worship. Both are the ways how to get rid of those people. One is crucifixion, another is worship.

Worship is more cultured. We say you are an incarnation of God, we will worship you. But we will not do what you say. How can we do? We are ordinary human beings. You were extraordinary — either you were a prophet sent by God, or a messenger, or the only begotten son of God, or you were a reincarnation of God — you could do miracles. We have created all kinds of miracles, only for one reason. To create a distance between us and the people who have been seeking the truth and the people who have ultimately found the truth. We were not ready to go with them.

There were only two ways: either to kill them, destroy them, so we can forget them and forgive them. They were a disturbing element, a nuisance. We were asleep and having such beautiful dreams and a Gautam Buddha comes and starts shaking you and tells, “Wake up!” Naturally you get angry.

There have always been a line of seekers of truth… I call it sannyas. It is eternal. It is sanatan.

It has nothing to do with me. Millions of people have contributed to it. I have also contributed my own share.
It will go on becoming more and more richer.

When I am gone there will be more and more people coming and making it richer. The old sannyas was serious.

I have contributed to it a sense of humor. The old sannyas was sad.

I have contributed to it singing, dancing, laughing… I have made it more human. The old sannyas was somehow life-negative.

I have made it life- affirmative. But it is the same sannyas. It is the same search.

I have made it more rich.

I have made it more grounded in the world because my whole teaching is `be in the world, but don’t be of the world.’There is no need to renounce the world. Only cowards renounce it.

Live in the world, experience it. It is a school. You cannot grow in the Himalayas. You can only grow in the world. Each step is an examination. Each step you are passing through a test. Life is an opportunity.

I will be gone. That does not mean that the sannyas movement will be gone. It does not belong to anybody.Just as science does not belong to Albert Einstein. Why the search for truth should belong to somebody? To Gautam Buddha? To J Krishnamurti? Or to me? Or to you?Just as science goes on growing and every scientific genius goes on contributing to it and the Ganges goes on becoming bigger and wider — oceanic; in the same way the inner world needs a science. The objective world has a science.

The inner world needs a science and I call sannyas the science of the inner world. It has been growing but because it goes against humanities attachments, ignorance, superstitions, so-called religions, churches, priests, popes, shankaracharyas… these are the enemies of the inner search because the inner search needs no organization.

Sannyas movement is not an organization: that is why I call it `movement’. It is individual. People join.

I had started alone and then people started coming and joining me and slowly, slowly the caravan became bigger and bigger.

But it is not an organization.

I am nobody’s leader. Nobody has to follow me.

I am grateful that you have allowed me to share my bliss, my love, my ecstasy.

I am grateful to you. Nobody is my follower, nobody is lower. There is no hierarchy. It is not a religion.

It is pure religiousness. The very essence. Not a flower, but only a fragrance. You cannot catch hold of it.You can have the experience of it, you can be surrounded by the perfume, but you cannot catch hold of it.Religions are like dead flowers you can find in Bibles, in Gitas… When they were put in the Bible they were living, they were fragrant, but now it is only a corpse.

All holy books are corpses, dead flowers and nothing else.Truth, the living truth, has to be discovered by each individual by himself. Nobody can give it to you.Yes, somebody who has achieved it can transpire a thirst in you, a tremendous desire for it.

I cannot give you the truth, but I can give you the desire for it.I cannot give you the truth, but I can show you the moon… please don’t get attached to my finger which is indicating the moon. This finger will disappear. The moon will remain and the search will continue.

As long as there is a single human being on the earth the flowers of sannyas will go on blossoming.

OSHO on how OIF should function!

      The committee of the commune should be in rotation;
every year new people are coming in and old people are going out,
so nobody becomes addicted to power.
      Power is the worst drug that people can become addicted to;
it should be given, but in very small doses and not for a long time.
Let the individual grow and let the commune grow – and forget all about society; don’t fight with it.
Don’t even say, “We are creating an alternative society..,”
I don’t teach you to be rebellious and to be revolutionaries.
I want you to be very silent, almost underground transformers.
Because all the revolutions have failed.. now the only possible way is that we should do it so silently and so peacefully that it can happen.
There are things which happen only in silence.
For example, if you love trees, you should not take up the rosebush every day to look at its roots; otherwise you will kill it.
Those roots have to remain hidden.
Silently they go on doing their work.
My people have to be just like roots:
silently go on doing the work,
      changing yourself,
      changing anybody who is interested;
      spreading the methods that can change;
      creating small pools,
      small groups,
      small communes
      and whenever possible bigger communes.
But let this whole thing happen very silently, without creating any upheaval.

Somewhat preoccupied with more pressing engagements I’ve only been popping in now and then to see if there have been any interesting new threads on SN. With the last I thought things might be picking up. Perhaps because I read Paramahansa’s Autobiography of a Yogi a month ago for about the seventh time and found myself enjoying it immensely. Now we have the OSHO trademark dispute and in my eyes a return to particularly uninspiring terrain. Who could have imagined back in the seventies, during the halycon days of Osho’s commune of spiritual rebels, that things would one day degenerate into who owns what in Osho’s somewhat patchy legacy. In my eyes its a tragi-comic joke because if Osho had such a thing as a legacy it had to do with how he affected people who had direct contact with him.

I find it significant who the first two people are who care to comment on the matter. Why I find it significant I will leave to the reader to decide. I reckon if you feel concerned who owns the right to use the trademark OSHO you were never fortunate enough to meet the man in question and experience a taste of what was on offer…free of charge.

No matter what you hear I can assure you that the best things in life are free and they don’t have a trademark, except perhaps for MARMITE. Anyone who tells you otherwise is ignorant of the truth.

  5. Ma Dhyan Shunya says:

Observations and Comments from Swami Bodh Ekantam at Bokaro Steel Plant
Meditation Camp organized by Ma Sadhana ( Official OIF spokeswoman )
This is the message the Inner Circle are spreading about Osho ??

    September 29, 2013 at 3:08am
I really feel ashamed as a disciple. What Osho gave to us what we disciples are giving back to Osho. We gave just food and clothes and shelter to Osho and he gave far more invaluable samadhi, sharpening of intelligence, freedom, silence, wisdom of so many masters, answers to our present and future questions, clarity, uplifting music and love to us.

Recently Ma Sadhna came to take a camp. I thought she would give us new young sanyaasins a glimpse of Osho. She gave a shock of life time to me.

She was teaching us not to go to other centres of Osho. She said Osho can be experienced only at pune.
She also said that there is no way i can understand Osho for next 200 years. I was told that if i can translate osho’s books into english and hindi , that would be enough for this life time.
A beautiful sanyasin an astrologer, at his office was keeping osho’s books which rarely were sold, mostly given free to read, he name his centre as osho chaitali jyotish kendra– this sadhna ma told him to drop name of Osho.
She says copy right is essential to save Osho’s work from nuclear war.
She played popular cheap music because she felt that otherwise people will not buy osho.
She said osho’s complete discourse wont interest todays generation so they need to be cut and edited to suit current young people.
She said she did not come to bokaro in marroon because then guest house would not have allowed her to stay.
She was disgusted with poor people coming in her camp. She sent me a message and wanted me to help her to reach to a large executive class working in bokaro steel plant.
She said osho’s pictures are harmful because truth is formless and osho wanted the future people to forget him and live on their own.
She asked us to compare pune commune with other centre and see which was bigger.
Regarding the high price tag and charges at pune commune, she said that osho’s presence is far more pricey a thing than their price.
She said that She is guided by Pure Osho and said Osho only in his english discourses is Pure Osho and those who do not know english, should first learn english, otherwise there is no hope for them. She said there is Osho Guidance which only she gets and that is the highest principle and i should not ask or think too much. She said heart is blind and one should use his mind for the inner journey.
She gave an strange osho sanyas, where one lady became Ma Gudi, Another poor boy became Swami Michael.
I still asked her many questions which she did not answer. she advised me to do dynamic meditation so that all these crap questions are thrown out of my system.

Since she left our home town, few of beautiful sanyasin friends have become victim of her teachings. They have got cut off from the rest. They have adopted five star life style even by taking debt, thrown their mala and picture and feel themselve to be highly evolved spiritually, look down those wearing mala and keeping osho’s picutres as very lower immature being.

I went to Pune recently with devotees of Ma Sadhna. There in Buddha Hall, people were dancing with their shoes on to popular cheap music played by few very popular DJs in the name of celebration. I asked the devotee of Ma Sadhna why shoes on, why the popular cheap music in sacred buddha hall- the high devotee said we have gone beyoud the conditioning of guru-disciple. He also said that when osho’s presence there is as intact and un-mindful of these, why don’t you put your shoes on. I said suppose i don’t put my shoes on, play real osho’s uplifting music, and put a picture of Osho there on the podium, Will Osho’s Presence get angry and leave the pune ashram. If not, then why not take off our shoes and put a photo there by same logic. The Devotee of Ma Sadhna had no answer, but statrted laughing uproariously just to show his spiritual height. I said by your logic why not start peeing on the Buddha Hall that would be breaking the disciple condtioning far effectively and why not shift the toilet into the hall. That Devotee of Ma Sadhana, really went into deep thought mode.

That devotee of Ma Sadhana had taken along with him a beautiful sanyasin an innocent poor villager with him to Pune commune. We all went to have food and food price was very high almost to vulgar proportions. That village sanyasing had an innocent and intelligent laughter and asked whether pune ashram people were mad. The devotee of Ma Sadhna, hushed the villager and later on was convincing him saying that vegetable here are either imported or grown with imported techniques, and one gm of ashram food has nutritional value of 10 gm of outside food and that this food is vibrating with osho presence and that it’s actual price should be much higher than the ashram price and he should be grateful that he is getting such divine food at such a low price, it is osho’s prasad and prasad is invaluable.

Throughout my stay in Pune, the wife and daughter of devotee of ma sadhna, kept asking me when i shall grow mature and drop the picture and mala. The Devotee of Ma Sadhna advised me to go for therapy and white robe and massage and sauna – again as if price is nothing in comparison to the divine benefits.

Now it is very clear to me New Man of Osho is nothing but Devotees of Ma Sadhna.Talk to them, you are talking to a wall, their standard resposnse will be “I know myself and Osho and there is no body in between”, “I am doing osho’s process”, “I am beyond conditioning of picture and mala and sacredness of buddha hall”, “Osho is formless exsitence itself, hence Picture and mala of Osho is dangerous but do not ask me why Pune ashram is selling osho’s pictures, why it is using and showing discourses, videos; why ashram is using the name of Osho – these questions just show that questioner needs to do dynamic.” “The high price tag of Pune is nothing compared to the preciousness of the Buddhafield.”

This is what we are giving back to Osho for his compassion. New Men of Osho are selling his name, videos, discourse, picture, meditations when it is to earn moolah. New Men of OSho are selling him to live a five-star life. And to reliably show our freedom from human conditioning, New Men of Osho break down the roof of Buddha Hall, go with shoes in hall, play popular and cheap music in hall, may be in future we shall be peeing and shitting in buddha hall. And now New Men of Osho are selling his property. New Men of Osho have arrived in Pune Ashram. Another 200 years of dynamic meditation is needed for those unenlightened stupid sanyasins who ask questions.

maybe being deranged is the new rave at Pune Resort… in the “old” days, it was sex ,drugs, money and meditating. Sure even back then, they(the big shots running things) frowned at the “poor” sannyasins… the ashram needed money, making it any which way they could. Money ran the ashram/ranch, and the centers, discos , restaurants, but at least they did welcome to some extent, the “poor” and the helpless wannabe sannyasins… Today- its about making money – period… all of this energy now focused onto money… leads to madness.. yes, mad people are running the show at the resort.. now what are you sannyasins going to do about it? whine and complain or actually eject those nuts into outer space, exactly where their minds are.

I totally agree with Ma Dhyan Shunya, the people in the resort are destroying Osho,s legacy, they are changing His words, with all these compilations,I read somewhere(I do not remember exactly)that they are taking jokes out of books.New sannyasins should not be discouraged, trust your heart, there are a lot of sincere disciples of Osho around,do not let this people(the resort people)affect you.His energy and guidance are happening now. This destructive process happened to Budha and Jesus, and other masters too, after they left the body.Keep your heart open, enjoy life, celebrate,do the meditations(soon they will try to change them too!)and live His teachings.

    • Lokesh says:

Mendiro talks about Osho’s teaching, yet I distinctly remember Osho telling me that he was not a teacher and he didn’t have a teaching as such. Once again we have the comparisons with Jesus, who rode into town on a donkey, and Buddha, who used a begging bowl. Apparently there exists some destructive process taking place that connects Osho with Buddha and Christ, but if you check the statistics all three are more popular than ever.

What is being destroyed are people’s preconceptions. This is firmly grounded in how Osho lived, he just loved to blow people’s preconceived idea’s about how a spiritual master should behave clean out of their swirling imaginations. Same goes for his non-existant teaching-

  8. shantam prem says:

    Satyadeva,
Seems like there are many people like you, who has no knowledge who are the main characters playing on the Black House. For many Osho watchers, after the name Sheela everything else is divine Leela!
Black House is used first time to describe that tiny place of geography which is similar to white house. I could have chosen the easy way out also, like the way sannyas majority does. Adding Osho prefix with everything and feeling like dad´s own property. for example, Osho Sky, Osho Earth, Osho universe, Osho World…..

So for the readers few main names and their functions.

(Canadian)Jayesh – Chairman and crown prince of Inner Circle
(British) Amrito- Vice Chairman and middle finger of Jayesh´s hand.
(Canadian) Yogendra- Younger brother of Jayesh. He is sincere to Osho and very sincere to his brother.
(Indian) Mukesh- CFO of the Osho Empire. How much money here, how much money there. A real wheeler and dealer.
(German) Parmod- He is the one who sends notices to one and all, The Taliban who protects copyrighted Osho
(Indian) Sadhana- The front woman. Who interacts with the Indian centres. The spokeswomen of OIF After all foreigners in India cannot come forward before the media and speak authoritevely.
Her main and only line now a days-Matter is under sub judice.

  9. chetna says:

I love this fight, this drama.

The above letter does not answer any questions really, which seems to be addressed to someone like me who have not met/seen Osho. I love the ending “Love, Inner Circle”. Considering the whole Inner Circle is a myth of its own and 99% of old sannyasins have not come back to Pune for 20-30 years, I am sorry I cannot not be fooled and listen to the “Inner Circle” without a pinch of salt.

Didn’t Osho talk about individual responsibility? Calling yourself the Inner Circle is just pathetic, unauthentic and certainly childish. Just say your name for God’s sake!

I have no issues with trademarking Osho. Wearing Osho bra or buying an Osho lighter will kill the word and its meaning… so trademarking is probably wise.

The question/issue is rather about CONTROL and MONEY, right? The Inner Circle (2 people?) are cashing in and want to preserve that right.

Since the Inner Circle have been working for the past 22 years “to the very best of their abilities, irrespective of the many alternative views from people other than Osho, can they please enlighten us:

    1. How many Osho centres have they opened around the world?

    2. How many centres have they supported financially and guided?

    3. How many books have they translated from early years of Osho into English and other languages?

    4. How many books are they selling worldwide?

In the last 22 years what we have seen clearly is:

    1. Numerous Osho meditation websites shut down.

    2. Threatening letters to numerous facilitators, centre leaders etc.

    3. Hundreds of experienced and loving sannaysins banned

If Pune management is a hub for Osho’s work expansion, why don’t they create an infrastructure that supports sannyasins worldwide? Their Business Model to charge everyone for everything including the hard work is outrageous! I still can’t get why people want to pay to work there?

I guess we are now counting days till their empire falls. More and more communes and centres open despite their threats which are more juicy, friendly and loving.

The Inner Circle have lost their “Inner” part and will face the music.

Arun alone has done much more than the whole of Pune over the years and I respect Rajneesh’s efforts against Pune’s hypocrisy and therapists-rapists that Pune has produced.

I have friends who are financially educated and worked at Pune’s resort. The amount of money made from therapies, other fees is more than enough to make entrance low and support Osho centres wordide. Instead, Osho’s Will apparently,is for a couple of guys to become millionaires “irrespective of the many alternative views from people other than Osho”.

The show must go on…. phew

If a mature seeker needs to read Autobiography of a Yogi for seventh time..
I just wonder, what kind of kick he is getting out of it.
What kind of hunger is there and what kind of nourishment?

  11. chetna says:

“If a mature seeker needs to read Autobiography of a Yogi for seventh time..” – only a mature seeker can actually read it , in my view

    • Lokesh says:

Autobiography of a Yogi can be read in various ways. Last time I read it a few years back I read it through cynical glasses. This time I read it after studying Paramahansa’s photo and deciding that he does not look like a man who fabricates stories and therefore found the book very moving and inspirational as the book was originally intended to be under the instructions of Sri Yukteswar.
Shantam enquires about what kind of nourishment can be digested by reading such a book…spiritual, of course. I in turn ask Shantam what nourishment he gets kicking up a rumpus about who contros Osho’s imaginary legacy. Very little as far as I can see. That’s what I dig about Sri Yukteswar…no beating about the bush…he gave clear instructions for how his star disciples should continue his work, Now these jokers are getting their chuddies in a twist arguing about Osho’s legacy, while entirely missing that Osho’s most fantastic gift was how he could affect people in a positive way simply by sitting silently in his presence. Hard to put a trademark on a positive vibe like that. As for the rest of the ball of confusion he left behind you can have it all to yoursef.

      • satyadeva says:

        Good post, Lokesh.

May I suggest another psycho-spiritual autobiography I’ve recently read (and am halfway through re-reading), Barry Long’s ‘My Life of Love and Truth’ (from Amazon). This time from an (almost) contemporary, down-to-earth, Aussie perspective, deeply grounded in a thoroughly western conditioning, but don’t let that put you off, it’s very well written, a sort of ‘hero’s journey’, full of extraordinary happenings, one or two perhaps even barely credible at times to a mundane mentality, but nevertheless a veritable ‘meditation-in-itself’, I find. And a refreshing change from all that Indian stuff…I defy anyone to read it with an open mind and not be amazed – and inspired.

        • frank says:

i`m not sure that its just about “cynicism”
for example,PY`s “healthy diet” that he recommended to wouldbe yogis was masses of cowmilk with a load of stodgy carbohydrates.
he was overweight and died of a heart attack in his fifties.
a quick visit to anyone studying nutrition at college ,(or even reader of the daily mail!) would have put him straight.
yet there is even a vid of him on youtube telling how to live healthy to a hundred.

is it really cynicism to wonder about the significance of kind of ignorance and the stupidity of those who follow just because he claims to be with “god”?

lokesh, you say you looking at his pic you thought PY to “not look like a guy who would fabricate stories”
i`m surprised you didnt notice that hes a dead ringer for shantam!!

that said, shantam does get that these modern day yogis are a kind of yogic hindu al quaeda/modern corporation, cashing in on people`s fear of the future and modernity by offering a retreat into an ancient kind of pure aryan desi fundamentalist indian paradise .
and like the fundamentalist muslim orgs, these guys pull in the westerners with their tall stories of power god and so on..

even osho has been pulled into this yoga world.
          osho couldnt stand yogis.
he used to go to melas and stick knitting needles up their ass.remember that one?
also he was on record as saying ayurveda was shite, celibacy was criminal, magic tricks in the name of spirituality was a con etc etc.
and now hes got himself lumped in with all this lot, just because he had the beard and the hair.

i said it in the ranch days.
he should shaved the beard, swapped the robes for leathers, swapped the rolls for a harley, got “enlightenment sucks”in sanskrit tatoo-ed on his chest…
now hes stuck in the akashik records next to all these saffron psychos…..
          oh well.

    • frank says:

1800 is a small gathering in india.
I used to get about that amount when I squatted down for a shit on a piece of wasteland over by the railway tracks!
its incredible to think of it now,it took a few minutes to get used to,but, like you, I could say: “finally some movement”

      I haven’t read autowhatever of a yogi for a few years,myself.
by synchronicity I saw it yesterday in a charity shop for a quid but I passed it up.
however,Ido agree that indian yogis, gurus and religion, even religionless ones do make for entertaining reading.
did you know that bloke on stage with arun has been done for fraud and firearm offences?
and there he is one stage as a holyman.
to be fair hes got some front.
that lot make the inner circle look a bit straight-laced.
and what about baba ramdev, the owner of that ashram in hardwar.
he thinks that being gay is an illness that he can cure.
in a country with an aids epidemic,he wants to teach yoga instead of sex-education.

can you imagine what Osho would have said about these jokers?

anyone who thinks that as a westerner, supporting these kind of characters and putting on fancy robes,red-ash on your forehead, jumping around twisting your body around going `om` makes you holy and “religious”…
      forget it…
it aligns you with bigots, psychos, crooks and turns you into a self-righteous jerk.

    • honeysucklerose says:

looks more like 500-or 600 attendees instead 1800.. typical over exaggeration on their part.. back during the ranch days, the big shots used to say 5,000 people would be living at the ranch all the while the maximum of 1,000 actually lived there(including the RHT program residents, even today people still exaggerate the numbers).. Trying to puff up the numbers, maybe to show the world how popular Osho was.. sad commentary…. the truth stands on its own, without the help of misguided morons.

  13. chetna says:

Look Frank, or simply there were a lot of people meditating/trying to meditate instead of drinking, depressing or being negative like you! India is India and yet it is beautiful to see so much interest in what Osho has produced for inner transformation.

    • honeysucklerose says:

india is a hell hole… 1 billion negative people running around, and maybe a few thousand trying to be positive.. get with reality chetna, Frank is only telling it like it is… not as delusional as most are.

    Sannyas is alive and kicking.
Left over test tubes of Sannyas sperms bank (UK) Ltd. are being adopted and given the new lease of life by Osho devotees of Nepal.

I have seen the amazing photos. If there are 1800 people in Arun´s meditation camp in Haridwar; 1500 must be fron Nepal.

Innocence has its own power. For example Russian Girls learning Reiki, Tantra, past life and what not and Nepali youth doing Hoo Hoo Hoo with full power till they get admission in some western university.

    Botox writing has no takers.

    • honeysucklerose says:

just exactly what is “proper identity”? you ask for it from those who criticize you, but not from those who agree with you… how about playing fair.

  16. shantam prem says:

As I have observed life in India, present and for centuries one remarkable fact emerges.
Indians have lost the genes to find their own life partner, thrill and insecurity of falling in love simply does not exist beyond the novels and pop cinema.
Somewhere it is so retro, so unnatural as in no other spices and mammals parents take this responsibility to find with whom off springs will be cohabitating.
Surely such calculated search brings stability as relations are tailored made. Income, property, age, height, family background, caste religion everything is taken into consideration. After many board room meetings, projects are given green light.
Without doubt, India is a country of happily married people. On a tragic side, there are more widow and widowers than single and divorcees.

it looks like, even modernity will not dent this trend in a big way. I am sure, after Osho No other spiritual master will ever touch this tricky issue. almost Whole country simply cut Osho off for the simple reason, He wanted to change the relating patterns of the country and bring fast track evolution.

How so ever good intentions Arun and others may have to spread the work of Osho, but it clear, they have chosen that part of the Lions meat, which is digestible to Hindu morals.

I hope history will not forget the facts, how children of rebels joined the military forces.

  17. chetna says:

“looks more like 500-or 600 attendees instead 1800″- I must say that’s how it looks to me too :)

  18. Preetam says:

So, now you are enlightened about the facts, same as society is well informed… but how ever you are guilty, because for most here the cause anyway is your highly praised collective unconscious.

It makes me think, whether Spirituality is just an invention of materialist’s…

Elitist fee and Trademark’s keeps hearts from dancing together, it creates pressure and separates.

That’s the too payable price, if you surrender to this money system.

  19. shantam prem says:

In India, Hindu preachers have said innumerable times with a grind of gratification, ” Hinduism is like big Ocean which absorbs all kind of rivers and streams and gutter water.”
All kind of meditation, prayers, rituals simply find their place in the shelves of this vast Hindu mart. Arun has surely created a synergy with Hinduism´s most famous poster boy, Baba Ramdev´s Patanjali Yoga School.

where masters fear to trend, his priests go fearlessly.

Question is why Osho Resorts does not go out and claim some market share?

Fist of all they have lack of human resources. One Sadhana and two three other Indian guys hand picked by the boss himself cannot waste their life on touring job. Osho has done enough tours.
And secondly, Amrito and Jayesh cannot go out and stand before the glaring Cameras. So much exposure in a foreign country can give the idea to the cats, in which holes mice are hiding.

  20. Vijaya says:

So sad, to see our Master being described as a kind of businessman, a salesman concerned with trademarks and businessmeetings.
The letter of the Inner Circle shows the essence of wellknown manipulative tricks of institutions: ‘you are wrong, because i know, although i don’t give you proves, and you have to believe me, or otherwise you will be punished and banned’.
To attack Ramateertha so personally, suggesting that he is destroying Osho’s work, is to me a really poisoning way of manipulation. It brings tears to my eyes.

  21. swamishanti says:

I have heard a rumour, dont know whether its true, that some of the old musicians like milarepa, miten and premal have been banned from the Super Osho Sauna-club Meditation Resort(TM).
Is this because they were singing osho songs?
Are people allowed to sing devotional music at all in the resort?
Or is only Michael Jackson and Kylie Minouge allowed to be played after dinner?
Or perhaps people are allowed to sing the old songs if they pay $50 baksheesh on entry?

  22. shantam prem says:

Without looking the whole post of Vijaya, which is quite a balanced post; wise Lokesh won´t stop his finger poking, where ever it goes.

  23. shantam prem says:

When a crime is being committed in a foreign country, all the people in the native country go into denial mode. For example in the trial of Foxy knoxy.
Something similar is the case with the blunders committed by Osho management.
As the top brass is from UK and Canada, it becomes all most impossible for many to digest a simple Lolly pop of facts!
Many such devotional gentlemen are here at sannyasnews too.

    • satyadeva says:

I suggest you desist from such innuendo about someone and something you don’t know enough about, Shantam (but imagine you do as you’ve ‘read the papers and seen the news’).

I’m specifically referring to your opening sentence above, by the way. Although it might very conceivably also be applied to the rest.

    • Arpana says:

      Shantam.
You are confusing the fact that pretty much nobody who posts here has any respect for your opinions, views; with support for the ashram people.

Saying you are behaving like a moron, isn’t saying the people who run the ashram are beyond criticism.

  25. Ashoker says:

With regard to the ‘esteemed communication’ from the Inner Circle, I am reminded of the line from Hamlet, which goes:

“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

Furthermore, and for some unknown reason the kind of words one typically associates with a Shakespearian tragedy e.g. drama, poison, deceit, manipulation, obfuscation etc. come to mind when reading the Inner Circle’s ‘hallowed missive’. I really don’t know why?

Perhaps I am doing them an injustice however, perhaps it is just a case of their needing to have a moan and whinge and requiring a sympathetic ear to listen. If that is indeed the case, then all I can say is: ” I think you came to the wrong place guys!” It would seem to me that the great majority of the contributors on this site are either anti-OIF management or indifferent. In my opinion they are scraping the bottom of the barrel here. Maybe this is a sign of desperation on their part. Oh and before I forget, the word ‘barrel’ is more than relevant I feel, and has fondly reminded me of some of the members of the Inner Circle. Let’s all sing ‘What Shall We Do with A Drunken Sailor’, in their honour. This should then be followed by a rendering of the famous British nursery rhyme entitled, ‘Oh Dear What Can the Matter Be? Three Fat Ladies Got Locked in the Lavatory?’ Perhaps these songs could be celebrated in the Samadhi?

Finally, I would just like to say directly to the Inner Circle: “Thanks for sharing.” (Shurely sumtin wrong ere Guv! I didn’t tink you did sharin?). “Oh the times they are a changing” (Bob Dylan’s words from the song ‘Blowing in the Wind!).
    Love,

    Ashoker

And this much idiot I am also not to think sannyasnews is a kind of Huffington Post or I am a hot shot journalist.

It is really none of my business how many eggs I get on my face and how much admiration.
I stand with each and every piece of my writing.

      • Lokesh says:

Not to mention Shantams repressed sexuality, which constantly bubbles to the surface in many of his comments in the form of innuendo. For someone who sees themselves as an Osho disciple this is a major flaw, because getting ones sexuallity sorted out is basic to the sannyas credo and Shantam has obviously not paid much attention to that aspect of his life. The idea being that its impossible to build something atop rotten foundations. On this level Shantam is no different from the majority of his fellow countrymen, who are labouring under centuries of sexual repression, the manifestation of which is tabloid headlines proclaiming Delhi to be the rape capital of the world etc. Its a sad story and a complex issue that could be helped by what Osho taught on such matters, but I doubt very few will even listen, if we take Shantam as an example….forever arguing the toss about regime change in the resort while totally ignoring personal aspects of his life that obviously require serious attention. This is one problem that arises when people imagine that they are connected with a spiritual teacher who is dead. Were Osho alive and Shantam were sitting at his feet, Osho would have prescribed the correct procedure for dealing with such a glaring personal problem. Unfortunately Osho is no longer with us and unless Shantam is fortunate enough to find someone who he respects enough to listen to what he says on such matters he will continue to stumble through life in much the same way as he is doing now…battling imaginary foes and gaining imaginary merit from something so few are really interested in. As I see it, Shantam is someone who is a sandwich short of a picnic and stubbornly self righteous about it. So warped are his perceptions he actually misinterprets scorn for praise and hence he will continue on his present course ad ifinitum. A sad story indeed, but certainly an old and tragic one that Osho did his utmost to draw attention to.

  30. sannyasnews says:

We just checked Oshonews…. after seeing Alok John had congratulated us for publishing the Inner Circle letter. Well, if it is published there on Oshonews it is sure hidden away well behind the in-flight articles. But someone has just shouted to us, no it isn’t there….
It is difficult to know how such an important response has been omitted from the highly praised in flight magazine. Protecting people from thinking for themselves was not where Osho was at.
In India it sure looks like a “religion” based on robes/malas, and rituals over 20 years old has been created. Not what the “old man” had in mind at all.

    • Lokesh says:

Protecting people from thinking for themselves was not where Osho was at.
There are more than a few who would argue that this statement is not entirely true, including myself. Yes, Osho said as much, but what people actually did around him often illustrated a short circuit in peoples critical faculties, because they were encouraged not to think for themselves.

  31. shantam prem says:

    Sannyasnews,
Let us face the fact, once the bond got broken between the synergy of east and west; Osho´s vision has become a poultry farm.
Nepali cooks in the Indian restaurants are creating tandoori out of it, and western hit by run therapists are creating their own version of Chicken nuggets.
One of the rarest experiment of our time will bleed in such a way; let me reveal it first time here, India´s one of the most respectful astrologer has predicted this back in mid 1990 that Osho has no posthumous glory in His life, His very own disciples were cause of the downfall in his life time, they will be the cause in the future.
I hope to translate that article in English and also with my own little bit knowledge about Western astrology.

To me, Osho was only handcuffed because the installation needed their interest good installed. Sannyasnews,
Please don´t delete any adjective about me how so ever offensive it may sound.
    Arpana,
You think I am running a bloody election campaign to be elected as Chairman of Osho Inner Circle?
My single point agenda is that if you don´t delete Osho´s words, you don´t bring changes in the music and duration of His meditations, on the same level, no disciple gets the authority to change the basic constitution of the ashram, which Osho gave the final touch during his last years.

Period of 1987-2000 is the most glorious phase of Osho´s work. Ten years after His death, Osho work was being run as if He is there. If it can be 10, years it could be 1000 years too.
Only problem is once Osho died, Amrito and Jayesh kind of people who were taking care of Master´s needs, simply became unemployed.
This was too much for them.

Only way to control the work of Osho in a foreign country was that how to turn the lion into a goat.
They did it successfully and result is obvious. Pizzas are lying in a oven which is not heating up at all.
I won´t take the credit but years ago, when I started writing my protest posts, much atmosphere has changed from then onwards.
Ripple effect has been felt. Court cases are taking place in India. Pockets of disciples, who have spend their life time around Osho are giving voice to their resentment, lots of sannyasins from around the world have created a kind of embargo against the high handed ness of the so called chosen few.

So if a Osho system is restored to its original glory, what extra benefits I will get?
Nothing. On the contrary, thousands of people like you may get the chance to feel the vibes and meditate in an atmosphere, which Osho created, in spite of being in a tortured body.

Simple fact is when you listen the screams of a rape victim, you can remain silent or give the evidence against the rapist. It becomes quite a arduous task when the rapist is a high level mafia.
By giving the evidence does not mean that you want to oblige the girl. You can oblige only your own consciousness.

I don’t even think we have a split between the West and East, to me it looks less horizontal but rather vertical: one group of sannyains think they are below Osho hence all the worship, whilst others sit comfortably above (famous “friends” so to speak). Sannyasnews gang certainly appear to belong to the second group.

Not for me to tell you that both groups miss the whole freaking point…

One thing is of course shared by both parties- they know what Osho’s plan was and how it all should be.

Of I forgot our management, they don’t belong to either because they simply RULE and are not here for inner transformation.

So don’t we think it is about time to appreciate and understand each other’s differences which are totally natural?

Outside of the Hyde park, few beggars were discussing the economic downturn.
One of them said, ” Thanks God..i don´t need to worry about monthly installements of the flat. Life is to enjoy the moment. It is not for working for EMI´s”.

Happiness is a fundamental right for everyone!

Being a disciple is different to being a devotee or a friend!
As the Editor of Sannyasnews I have been an Osho disciple since 1975, and still feel the same way.
On Lokesh’s point – I see little difference between the admonition to be “a light to oneself” and thinking for oneself where it is necessary. I know devotees have difficulty with this, but they always did, and not just with Osho! thanks to Chetna for the post.

  38. chetna says:

“Being a disciple is different to being a devotee or a friend!”

Certainly it is. Osho has explained the difference very beautifully in his various discourses. From a student to a disciple, from a disciple to a devotee, i.e. from the head to the heart to the being. All quite scientific, hey?

“don’t feel above him, but neither do we worship him like a god.” – and hence there should be no conflict but understanding of two extremes if you sit in a happy middle. With understadning comes maturity and that what we miss in sannyas movement.

I appreciate that sannyasins learnt from Osho to be individuals and think for themselves but that on its own borders a lot with arrogance if no heart is there. With the heart compassion flows with understanding.

It is possible to over analyse.
We are all, wherever we are at with him,
      and probably what we think,
what labels we put on this,
doesn’t alter the facticity of what is. .

      • Parmartha says:

I agree here with Arpana. I see no problem for example for a disciple to say he or she has a heart connection, but where necessary thinks for him or herself.

The game that is played out here, always reminds me of an insight that came to me during the Thatcher regime, when I realised those who hated and condemned her, danced round her, gave her as much attention as those who loved her.
A revelatory moment for me in a personal sense as well, as I was having trouble with neighbors, and realised, that to knock on their door was to involve myself, albeit negatively, with people I didnt want to know.

    • satyadeva says:

From student to disciple to devotee sounds like ‘the path of love’ rather than ‘the path of meditation’. Not that the two are necessarily always mutually exclusive.

But perhaps, Chetna, the “immaturity” you cite as widespread in the sannyas movement is due to overwhelming emotionality, including emotionality masquerading as love? And the difficulty of transforming that ‘sound and fury’? Just like the whole world of humanity in fact!

Perhaps in contrast to earlier times, I don’t know, but I’d say very few these days manage to come to the refined love of a devotee without considerable meditation (not forgetting normal evolutionary requirements, including in many cases preliminary therapy and getting one’s life ‘on track’, ie as unproblematic as possible).

I put it to you that for the vast majority, meditation, both formal and as a way of life, is a prerequisite for any transition from student to disciple, disciple to devotee. Also, that the real meaning of ‘devotee’ is ‘lover of Life’ (the inner depths) rather than lover of any specific individual, including a Master, who is, after all, although ‘one with Life’, only a ‘doorway’, a reflection of our own being, isn’t he?

    from todays `daily mail online`:

a portly middle-aged indian gentleman appeared in court this morning clad only in his underpants, and was charged with frequently exposing himself to passers by both at hyde park corner and on jackassnews.
the prosecution stated that the arresting officers, sgt. george meredith and pc r panner demanded to know what the large protrusion in his holy underwear was.
the defendant replied that it was only a metaphor,
and that the officer should be looking at the moon and not the finger pointing at the moon and that western people could not understand the thinking that is not logical and in the straight lines,as anyone who has watched a bit of porn can understand!

the defendant pleaded not guilty to several charges of public indecency, attempting to peddle ludicrously mixed metaphors and possession of 2 over-ripe mangoes.

    the (head) case continues…….
