Osho’s Waterworld

Osho’s Waterworld

The book “Light on the Path” (11/12/85) is described by Viha: In the first talks given after his departure from America, Osho addresses his disciples’ uncertainty after the breakup of their Oregon commune.

In Chapter 3 (Now our commune exists all over the world) as an answer to the question, IF NATIONAL BOUNDARIES AND VISA RESTRICTIONS CONTINUE TO SEPARATE US FROM YOU AND FROM EACH OTHER, WHAT IS BEST FOR US TO DO ABOUT IT? Osho describes an interesting proposition. Below I am quoting the complete island references (I know they are long for which I apologise, but the content is fascinating). Was Osho an islomaniac?

Though I have no evidence and merely going by the rumours of the time I am pretty sure the island Osho is talking about is Brandos’ Tetiaroa. You can see the submerged sections, airstrip, hotel, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetiaroa

http://googlesightseeing.com/maps?p=21828&c=&t=k&hl=en&ll=-17.018215,-149.556541&z=13

Brando’s good (island) doctor always seemed like an Osho spoof to me and perhaps also a warning about too much transhumanism.

[quote]
There are still islands which are absolutely without any control by any government. A few are very undeveloped, so it will be a difficult job to develop them. But there are three islands which are fully developed; one has even an airport – it belongs to an individual who is willing to sell it.

The situation is such – there are five miles of land which is lush green with big trees… immens beauty. It is almost an oval-shaped island. One part is above sea level. It has the greenery and on it the owner has made small houses.

From the outside they look like the houses ancient, primitive people used to live in, so they do not stand apart from the trees and from the greenery; they are part of it. But from inside they are airconditioned and with all modern equipment. The island has twelve bungalows, one hotel for eighty persons, one airport where, morning and evening, the plane comes; we can have our own planes.

And the other part of the island is five, six feet under the sea. The owner has not done anything on that part, and to me that part seems to be the most important, because we can make a five-mile row of houseboats – like Kashmir – on that. And it will look far better than Kashmir because on Kashmir you can see the land; the boat is attached to the land, the land is underneath the boat.

You can see water all around and there can be boats for five miles. We can accommodate thousands of sannyasins in those houses. They are beautiful houses, and we can improve upon them. And between the two – the forest in front, the houseboats at the back – between the two is a big lake. So small boats can move in the lake to provide small things for people on the boats. It is something absolutely ideal.

And the person is in a hurry to sell it. Perhaps he is financially broke, perhaps he is too old and now he has no energy for it. So most probably we will get it.

* * *

There will be no need for any visas for anybody to come for as long as he wants to stay; there will be no need for any passport. At least we can create one place in the world where no nationality is recognized, no religion is recognized, no political boundaries are recognized. And perhaps that may give the idea to other people, that it is possible – and these are the same human beings, they have come from us. Just an absolutely clear-cut model is needed.

So there is no need to be worried. It is only a question of a few weeks…. And soon we will have our own place, and I will call all my people to start working. And we can absorb as many people as we want, because we are not thinking of making houses, we are thinking of making houseboats (laughter in the audience – my note). Then the ocean is unlimited; then there is no problem about it. Why bother about land? Just a small piece of land will be enough for the functional things – the hotel, the airport. Otherwise we can go on spreading on the ocean.

And about the ocean the laws are such that around any island or land, two hundred miles of ocean is yours. So around the island for two hundred miles we can spread as much as…. And it will be a more mobile society. All those boats can move, all those houses can move. It will be more alive; it will not be a dead society, fixed, where everything remains where it is.

Man has not tried to live… otherwise water can be a far more beautiful place to live. Freedom to move – otherwise you become attached to the house, to the land. And I know of methods in Japan: they float gardens on the water. They mix straw with earth and float it, and then you can put any seeds on it; you can have roses and you can have all kinds of flowers. Japan has tried floating gardens for thousands of years; it is a perfect science.

And we have our sannyasins who can come and make floating gardens all around, so you don’t miss anything. One sannyasin has reported that one of his friends, a scientist, has made a house under water, fully air-conditioned with everything palatial, and on top he has made a beautiful garden. So you see only the garden; the house is underwater. And from the garden is the door to enter into the house. And he has found a special glue to mix with cement so that water cannot disturb it.

And he has succeeded in it. He has made it – it is now a successful experiment. We can call that man and we can give him all the opportunity to make houses underwater. An underwater house has a totally different beauty. You can make it in glass all around. Just as you can see the sky, you can see the ocean and the fish. And they are so colorful and they have such a beauty. Many of them have their own torches. In the night it is a procession of torches – those fishes flash light.

* * *

Just, people remain orthodox about everything, so whatsoever has been done, they go on doing it. My hope is that in our commune we will try everything new; and drop the whole idea of how people have lived. And we will start not only on the economic, the psychological, the spiritual, but on the physical – on everything… fresh and new, and make it a model for the whole universe. You will have so many tourists that it will be enough to feed your whole commune.

And these Japanese who float pieces of earth on the ocean, on the river, on the lake – they grow flowers; they can grow food also. It is only a question of accepting the unknown and exploring it.

So no sannyasin has to be worried about it. Within a month we will have our place, and within a year people will start coming. And my idea is: perhaps on earth we cannot make a commune of one hundred thousand sannyasins, but on the ocean we can (laughter in the audience – my note). And we are going to do it! [quote end]

It is common knowledge that Osho used to watch Patton over and over and I assumed that he was doing it to get an insight into the American psyche. The other day I was watching Oliver Stone’s new Untold History of the US and he said that Nixon also watched the film Patton repeatedly. What’s up with Patton? I watched the movie a couple of months back to see what Osho might have learned from it but I am none the wiser.

  3. eckhart says:

Osho on using Mind, Don’t fight with the mind :

Osho – Listen to the mind for the outside world, don’t listen to the mind for the inside – simply put it aside. There is no need to fight with it, because if you fight with it it may influence you. You simply put it aside. That’s what faith is.

Faith is not a fight with the mind. If you fight, then the enemy impresses you, and remember… even friends don’t have such an impact as enemies have. If you fight with someone continuously, you will be influenced by them, because you will have to use the same techniques to fight them.

Ultimately, enemies become similar. It is very difficult to be aloof and detached from the enemy; the enemy influences you. And those who start fighting with the mind become great philosophers. They may talk about anti mind, but their whole talk is of the mind. They may say, ’Be against the mind’, but whatsoever they say is coming from the mind even their enmity. And you have to remain with your enemy.

And by and by enemies settle terms, and they become the same. It happened in the Second World War. Adolf Hitler almost completely turned the whole world Nazi, Fascist. Even his enemies, those who were fighting against Fascism, also became Fascist; they had to.

One interesting incident happened: Adolf Hitler was almost mad, and he wouldn’t listen to the military experts. He thought himself to be the greatest military genius ever born; so the whole war was to be conducted according to his whims.

That’s why in the beginning he continued to win, because the French generals, English generals, American generals and Russian generals, could not understand what was going to happen. They could have understood if the war was being run by military generals – they have the same minds. Then they could have known what the next move would be.

But here was a madman who didn’t believe in any military training, who didn’t believe in any military tactics or strategy, who would simply decide. And what was his way of deciding? He had astrologers to decide! And you may be surprised that when Churchill came to know, he had to appoint an astrologer.

And Churchill thought that this was foolish, because he was an army man! It was foolish to decide how the war should be run by using astrologers! But if the enemy is doing it what can you do? And the moment he appointed astrologers he started to win, because now they were the same.

Always remember, don’t fight with the mind otherwise you will have to yield to the terms. If you want to convince the mind, you have to be argumentative – and that is the whole point. If you have to convince the mind you have to use words – that is the whole problem. Simply put it aside. This putting aside is SHRADDHA.

It is not against mind, it is beyond mind, it is simply putting it aside. Just as when you go out, you use your shoes, and when you come in, you put them aside – there is no fight, nothing. You don’t say to the shoes, ’Now I am going in and you are not needed so I will put you aside’, you simply put them aside, they are not needed.

“I am creating sannyasins. These sannyasins can do much, not only for this country but for the whole world. They can bring a new education into existence, a new kind of man, a new kind of discipline, a new love for life and creativity, a new consciousness, a meditativeness. When a person acts out of that meditation, his acts are always beneficial to himself and to others. He is a blessing to himself and to the whole universe too.”

This is almost like a preamble to Osho´s ambitious project.
But prologue has become somethig like-
” While we change your summer tyres to winter, have a coffee.”
Nion sign at the gate of a factory, which was founded by a visionary to produce most enviornmantally friendly car.

      > PS-Vartan take notice. when words create reality, it is vision otherwise just poetry. Still not bad..

Words do not create reality. Reality just is. Words are what describe reality. Words imply a ‘self’ and a ‘other’ or ‘others’ in communication. To me, Osho’s island story above is science fiction but what makes it important is that it is not science fantasy. These days more or less it has been proven that science fiction is basically prophesy.

eckhart sorry mate, I cannot see how your fight with the mind fits into any of this. I wish you luck. You are going to need it.

      • babasvetlana says:

i thought that we created reality(actually it’s “illusion”) but for the general public’s sake, since they are stupid, i’ll call it “reality”.. Our thoughts are our reality, and when we make our thoughts into a physical presence it becomes a concrete reality, hence all of the meditations given by buddha and osho and others to ignore and go beyond that. the “real” reality is a topic for another day.. it would be asking too much from you yokels to comprehend right now

  5. shantam prem says:

Why countries need new leaders, why business corporation needs new CEO´s?
Cann´t the countrymen and the workers get dictations, commands and advises from the photos of the late leaders and founders?
Religions are doing it for thousands of years!

  6. Lokesh says:

Waterworld, staring Kevin Costner was a flop. Waterworld, staring Osho and a cast of thousands never went into production. One can surmise that it could well have been a flop also. Growing roses and many different kinds of flowers in sea water would have taken a miracle. Having a two hundred mile sea border to patrol might have stretched the budget as well as international maritime laws. Coming from Osho it might be judged visionary. From any of us it would be deemed a colourful flight of fantasy at best.
One definition of utopia is, an impractical, idealistic scheme for social and political reform, which about sums this piece of nonsense up.
Back in the seveties Osho once had a few hundred of us utopians up at a place called Saswad. We stumbled about on a barren hillside marvelling at signs with names like Vrindivan, Lao-tzu House etc. We could see it all sprouting out of the desert. I actually spent a month there shifting a few tons of centuries old ruble in a derelict fortress. It all came to nothing and it was then time to move on to another broken dream.
I too watched the movie Patton a couple of times, trying to figure out Osho’s fascination with it. Beats me.
A relevant Patton quote, “Life’s real failure is when you do not realize how close you were to success when you gave up.”

    • eckhart says:

I have seen movie WaterWorld alone in theatre as obviously ..big budget movie flopped dramatically. Movie is going to be flop cause general people in society will never understand beauty of aloneness. I can say ..it was one of the best movie i have seen. and today its known as greatest classic movie. Background score is amazing .. mindblowing. Kevin was 30 to 40 years ahead in making this movie. If u wanna experience beauty of aloneness …… this is great n amazing movie.

      • eckhart says:

Many great movies goes flop that doesnt means its really flop. and many foolish movies goes blockBuster that doesnt means its really has value in it. Super animation movie Atlantis the lost empire flopped but today its a super classic movie. There is huge demand for DVD of WaterWorld in USA and Europe.
Just listenUp soundtrack … goosebumps allover…hahahaha ..wow …

Eckhart, your taste in movies is obviously not very developed. Try something a little more intelligent. I suggest ‘Live and Become for a start.

        • eckhart says:

Lokesh , u have trapped yrself in complex words. example : OSHO has left dream ..his work is waking up ..dream – waking up. Instead of feeling and seeing as whole ..u have again broken statements than words and started deriving meaning from it. OSHO is trying to explain truth which is not possible to express with words …even 1%. but u have to feel it… forget all yr intelligent crap bla bla bla ..which is coming from intelligent donkey mind. At the end ( Tip of Mountain – whatever yr way to reach mountain ..all paths atlast merges towards BHAKTI BHAV) ..atlast … only Bhakti Bhav , Shraddha , total surrender will work.

“Life’s real failure is when you do not realize how close you were to success when you gave up.”
    This summarises…The Neo-Sannyas Journey!

    • Lokesh says:

Then again, didn’t Osho say that nothing fails like success? Life, it seems, is full of apparent cotradictions….especially as far as Osho is concerned.
He left us his dream, a real contradiction there seeing as how his life’s work mainly consisted of waking other people up from their dreams, only to fill the space with one of his. In this case not a particularly realistic or original one.

      • bodhi vartan says:

        Lokesh says:
        > … his life’s work mainly consisted of waking other people up from their dreams, only to fill the space with one of his. In this case not a particularly realistic or original one.

What I left it out of the extracts above (to concentrate on the waterworld element) was Osho also speaking about platform cities suspended in the air … as it happens I have a pet interest in airships, so it rung some bells there too.
        http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/abraxas/air_zps4f7200e9.jpg
(Can you imagine if we built a city in air above the Ranch? Hehe. That would have mind-blown their law books. Enough of that tho.)

These ideas might not be particularly original but they ALSO haven’t been done yet. What I am trying to say is that the Ranch was not Osho’s specific choice. That was what he was presented with and he just went along with it. What we have above is Osho’s soaring informed imagination.

If you ask me, the biggest problem with trying to run a commune around Osho, was Osho himself. He was such a magnificent attractor, he was attracting all sorts. People can (only) be motivated through two emotions, self-interest or compassion … and there were too many hanging around pretending to be there out of compassion, and then their nappies leaked. At least now, with the cat gone, we know that everyone here, is here out of self-interest.

“I don’t measure a man’s success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom.” (George S. Patton)

      • Lokesh says:

I do not find Patton to be a particulary inspiration man. Take the following quote for example.’Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.’
Mmmmh…quite. I’m more from a background where songs like Universal Soldier ring a bell. Here’s a line:

‘He’s the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
        And brothers can’t you see,
This is not the way we put an end to war.’

  8. shantam prem says:

If someone compare Lance Armstrong with Roger federer, Tour d france with Paris open, it is unfair to all sides.
So in a way, people like Lokesh needs to think, in which sector they are putting Osho into. His success, failure and innovative approach should be judged according to the players in that particular field.
As far as this sentence, I leave you my dream is concerned, i don´t buy it anymore. Most probably this pharse is put into dying Osho´mouth by his one and the only faithful disciple, Dr. Amrito!

    • Lokesh says:

Yeah, Shantam I’ve heard the ugly rumours about Amrito and none of it makes any difference to anything much as far as I can see..even with a telescope. Part of Osho’s legacy, one could say.
People like Lokesh? I wonder what they look like. Where can I meet them? Sounds like fun.
I don’t really see myself putting Osho in any kind of sector. He was the most remarkable man I ever had the pleasure of meeting. I’ve always made a point of maintainingg a warts-an-all vision of him and so it will remain.

    • bodhi vartan says:

Small for Humanity; anyway the whole universe is our creation and resulted by celebrating love within the wave of silence. This earth should be cleaned of the warmongering tyrants; other wise Humanity never will find peace till in thousands of years. Even if there would be harmony between all the folks on earth, those tyrants will try keep humanity within their bondage. At least they will create aliens themselves for attacking earth and Humanity and keeping their weapon plot business up unto their order of Leadership.

A place found deep within existence mostly in gold what first seems anthracite… silence rises, love leads… perhaps him self into this world. That each of us carrying alone within, but the outside is our responsibility and not the lies from false authorities.

    > … Yet many people want to say that science is telling us what’s REAL, not just our perceptions of it.

Being guilty of repeating myself … real comes from the word royal, which means that the King decided what is real, a long time ago. Our reality is totally conditioned. Get over it.

What you are not taking into account is the fierce stability of the physical medium. But we never look at the medium itself. What we are looking at is a map of the medium that our brain has created … but the map is never the territory. Psychology is the study of the differences between the map and the territory. Perception is everything.

Standard Model – Predicts the existence of the Higgs Boson
    http://s4.hubimg.com/u/6056859_f520.jpg

In 1916, Bohr became a professor at Copenhagen University. In 1920, he was appointed director of the new “Institute of Theoretical Physics.” In this position, he was in a position to be instrumental in building the theoretical framework of quantum physics. The standard model of quantum physics throughout the first half of the century became known as the “Copenhagen interpretation,” although several other interpretations now exist. Bohr’s careful, thoughtful manner of approaching was colored with a playful personality, as clear in some famous Niels Bohr quotes.

Well the bottom line is that it would vindicate the Standard model. Which is a pretty big deal, this is the leading model describing the fundamental particles and forces of nature. These 12 fundamental particles and four force carriers are as seen in jpg above…

  16. If Osho is alive today (he is but not in our dimension) he would have laughed off all those who are now calling themselves Osho.

He would have even encouraged them. That is how hilarious Osho is!

    No way.

There is only one Osho and there will never be another, not even a carbon copy or the copy of a carbon copy!

I read Mystic Rose, the book written by the guy calling himself Osho Rajneesh. It is not a bad book, but it sure is not Osho Rajneesh! Ha!

I believe that guy must have fallen so much in love with Osho he decided that one of the best ways to pay him homage is to call himself Osho Rajneesh! LOL!

Well, the name Osho Rajneesh is not Osho. It is just a name. In more than 300 Osho books that I have been reading since 1982, he always taught that we should be ourselves! He was completely against carbon copies. That is the gist of his teaching.

His disagreement with organized religion is based on this too.

He was the most authentic and self-aware master who ever walked on this planet.

And that was one of his most powerful teachings–to be yourself because that is the first step to knowing yourself.

To put it zenfully, (as Osho had superbly taught in his more than 600 books) we’re already that we search for! We can’t even step in the same river once.

All we need is just to awaken and realize that we’re already a Buddha.

You can’t even take one step and if you do, you miss it!

    Awaken!

That was the basis of his dynamic meditation–to help us awaken.

He acknowledged Jiddu Krishnamurti’s teaching that no guru, book or technique is needed.

However he added that, Krishnamurti’s teaching is the last stage.

Much must be done before one reaches that stage where no technique, teaching or guru is needed! The pathless path. Neither this nor that of Sosan.

This is Osho’s Open Garden Of Truth because Hakim Sinai’s Garden was walled, but Osho’s is open to all.

Unfortunately, to paraphrase Jesus , people have eyes and yet blind, ears and yet deaf, alive and yet dead.

I was very fortunate to have attained Enlightenment before I discovered Osho in 1982. He was the one who finally explained to me what nobody else was able to explain and help me to relax and start enjoying Enlightenment!

To me, I felt like he was my long lost Cousin!

I felt like he was Gautam Siddharta the Buddha and I was Ananda!

Therefore, it is very laughable to hear that some people are calling themselves Osho! And the Mystic Rose guy went all the 9 yard and is calling himself Osho Rajneesh!

I will not be surprised if somebody comes out and go even further and complete it all and call himself Bhagwan Shree Osho Rajneesh Chandra Mohan Zorba Meets Buddha, The Sex Guru of The Rich! Why not?

May be I should do that and put that Mystic Rose guy to shame! Hahehaheh!

I wonder why everybody is picking on him. It’s people like him that make the rest of us look good. You should be grateful.
