The Fiction of Poona

Q:  Since you gave me sannyas, I feel like I am in an abyss. Other people are not reachable for me; I am only fixed up to the fire of your eyes – a tremendous Poona fiction story.

Osho replied:

Right, I am creating a fiction here: the fiction of the Master and the disciple, the fiction of the god and the devotee. It is really a myth, but very alive. And there is no way to come to the truth unless you pass through a great mythology. Man is lost in lies. From lies there is no direct way to truth. Myth is a bridge between the lie and the truth. A myth partakes of something of the lie and something of the truth; it is a bridge.

Yes, you are right. This is a tremendous Poona fiction story. Whatsoever is happening here is very fictitious – these people in orange, and so many crazy things going on, and I am supporting you and leading you towards nowhere and promising you things which cannot be promised.

Osho smiling

Man lives in lies, God lives in the truth; but how to bridge both? Man is a lie, God is a truth; how to bridge both? It is very impossible. Myth is the way – fiction, yes, a spiritual fiction. All the religions are fictitious, all the mythologies are fictitious, but they are of tremendous help. A mythology has something of the truth in it – maybe just a reflection – and something of the lie in it. You can move through the myth towards truth.

And if an alive myth is available, don’t miss it, because a dead myth loses all contact with truth. It becomes a lie. That’s why religion has to be born again and again. When Jesus is alive, the Christian myth is alive. Then people traveled through that myth and reached to truth. Jesus gone: the myth is there but the truth is gone. When myth is there and Jesus is no longer there, the other shore is missing; then it is again just a lie, just a fiction – with no grounding in the truth.

Christianity is a lie; Jesus is a myth.

Krishna is a myth; Hinduism is a lie.

That’s why down through the centuries it has always been emphasized that if you can find an alive Master, don’t miss the opportunity. An alive Master is a myth – something of the untrue and something of the true, both. Something of the untrue means something of the human, and something of the true means something of the divine. That’s why the Gospel says Jesus is the son of man AND the son of God. This is a myth. Being the son of man and the son of God is an impossibility, but that’s what a myth is: God and man meeting, son of God and son of man – something of the lie and something of the truth.

But Jesus gone, then only lies remain. The Pope is not a myth, neither is the Shankaracharya of Puri – they are dead. They don’t speak from their own experience; they speak from tradition.

A myth is a very fragile flower, like a rose flower. In the morning it is there in all its glory – even Solomon will feel jealous – and by the evening it is gone. How fragile, and how strong. In the morning breeze, how strong it was and how beautiful. Even the vast sky must have felt jealous, and even the sun himself must have felt jealous. A rose flower is a rose flower – so small, and yet so beautiful; so fragile, and so vital and so alive, so fragrant. By the evening, the petals have fallen into the earth and the flower is gone.

A Jesus is also fragile, a Buddha also.

While I am here, it is a myth – an alive myth with a heart, beating. Use this opportunity. When I am gone, it will be a lie.

And this is the misery: that by the time people come to know, the flower is gone. When the flower is gone, they will worship for centuries and centuries. They will worship the past, the dead, the grave. When the flower is alive, they will deny, they will escape, they will protect and defend themselves against it. They may even destroy the flower because the very existence of the flower makes them feel very sad. The very existence of the flower makes them aware of their smallness, their ugliness. The flower creates a contrast.

Hence they crucify Jesus and poison Socrates and kill Mansur. And then they worship. The same people who kill Jesus will worship him. They will even worship the cross, because Jesus died on the cross. And these are the same people. The murderers and the worshipers are not different. The enemies and the believers are not different. These are the same people – the same human mind and the same human stupidity.

Yes, it is a fiction that I am creating here, but it is alive. That is the difference. While I am here, the myth is an alive bridge; you can pass through it towards the unknown.

so, what the old man is saying is, once he’s gone those still hanging around in Poona, Nepal, whether they maybe, those who still push his word, are murderers(murderers and worshipers are the same). i wonder if those idiots running the “resort” know this, same with Arun up in Nepal. will they admit to it, that they are just like murderers? Arun is running around pushing osho’s work as if were the new religion on this earth. the resort yokels, in their way are doing the same- all sucking out cash from gullible and stupid people. Instead i think they ought to sell vacuum cleaners… they are experts at sucking…..

“the same human mind, the same human stupidity”… Very well said pops. Stupid sannyasins and wannabes? the same as the general population? “Sheela, i’m simply socked!!!” Though i wonder why osho used to say that “his” people were intelligent as opposed to those following Meher Baba, Krishnamurti, Raman Maharshi, whom he used to call stupid. did he need extra cash too? no better way than to boost someone’s ego to raise revenue.

You seem obsessed with money. Perhaps you don’t have enough, but that is not a crime, I understand. My whole effort will be to separate the money making process from the spiritual work.

  3. bodhi vartan says:

The paragraph above the “Since you gave me sannyas, I feel like I am in an abyss.” reads:

“Please will you explain to me what “the way of religion” means? I have always been so strongly against religion that I cannot imagine what it means. But, anyhow, I suppose it is the way of total aloneness. And this makes me a little uneasy. (from Osho: Ecstasy, The Language of Existence – 1976)

    Cult or Religion?

There are a number of definitions of the words but the meaning I go by (and I feel the correct one) is that while the originator is alive it is a Cult, and after his death it becomes a Religion. While the master is alive, a lot (if not everything) can change but once his is gone ‘some elements’ will be set in stone. The “perpetual change” manner with which the Resort is attempting to operate, is a sad effort to maintain the movement’s cult status, rather than allowing its natural progression into a religion. By not accepting that after the master lives his body, what we are left with is a Religion, means that the religion will happen around us anyway, outside our sphere of influence.

Religions are formed by the permanent fixtures: the books, the active meditations, the growth groups. There really isn’t much difference between Religion and Myth. The stories of the Greeks become Myths and the stories of the Hebrews became Religion. Deep down they are all, just stories.

Time to start writing some new stories or as they say, create some new myths. Osho/Neo-Sannyas is going to be a religion, there is no escaping it. The title of the article above is: The Fiction of Poona … well, how about: “The Fiction of Poona II?” Many like to think that Osho’s philosia arrived ready-made, when in fact, he was constantly evolving his ideas based on new information arising out of his experiments. Zen and particularly Osho’s simplified Zen is going to be the next big world religion.

    Come on Lokesh!

    • Lokesh says:

Come on what, Shantam? I’m not out to change any structures in the resort or any of that nonsense. You are.
All along I’ve stuck by what I truly know. Osho was all about a living presence that was once great to be a part of. I don’t give a hoot about his ashes, his books, his discourses or the losers who are so deluded that they actually believe they are doing Osho’s work or somehow bringing his vision into the world.

So what EXACTLY are you doing here? Time is everything. We like to feel that we are spending our precious time in this body, being with people and things we love. If you are not in love with Osho perhaps you should be spending (the little time you have left) with what YOU love.

One of my favourite authors is William Gibson. He is known for being the first to conceptualize Cyberspace (Neuromancer, 1984) and he even coined the term for it. When asked in an interview (No Maps For These Territories, 1999) on how he thought of it, he said he was passing an old style amusement arcade full of stand-alone electronic game machines, and he saw all the people individually pre-occupied inside “a computer created space” and what if, they were all inside the same space …

Meditators go in, to a space within. What if they are all entering the same space? It is easier to see when meditating with others but lone meditators can also find it because The Field is boundless. See you there. It will change your mind, and you can keep the change. Hehe.

        • Lokesh says:

Vartan asks, ‘So what EXACTLY are you doing here?’
Well, there is thing going on called entertainment and it just so happens to be somthing I enjoy.
He then goes on to deliver some unasked for advice: ‘If you are not in love with Osho perhaps you should be spending (the little time you have left) with what YOU love. ‘
This sounds completly corny to me. Osho is dead. As I’ve repeatedly said on this site Osho was an alive presence while alive and the years I spent with him were amongst the most memorable of my life. It was great to be part of the myth he created. I don’t experience Osho as a living presence in my life today, yet what I am today has partly to do with him and I am grateful for that. I think people who rattle on about Osho being with them etc today are delusional.
One of the quote’s conclussions is ‘The murderers and the worshipers are not different. The enemies and the believers are not different. These are the same people – the same human mind and the same human stupidity.’ I agree with that 100%.

  7. Preetam says:

Lokesh says: ‘These are the same people – the same human mind and the same human stupidity.’

My reality is a bit different.

It is not the same Human Mind; it is of a minorities Mind. Osho speaks here of the same Solomon intrigue against man, installed by, myths, Archetype and Fiction. Till today our whole society is run by those myths and Archetypes. It would make us freer, going beyond those old myths and Archetype. Osho tried to break those Myths, Fictions, Archetype which lead our world Society into an abyss.

The few like to create a Transhuman being, technical immortal. But it will perhaps result a Demonic world. Not understanding wealth by their confusion for fear of lost.

Osho is not the architect of those lies. Osho is fighting against those lies; he tries always shifting coming closer my self, as for me. The problem always will be the disciple, not the Master. Reality must be rebellious if Humanity is not respected as it deserves, by those “few” whom keeping Humanity in Wars for their blood orders benefit and goals of reign.

Osho and every Masters of past, presents and future will labour giving back dignity unto Humanity, pushing disciple realizing once true self, as long it is needed.

For those few an effective development would be, how to kill the Masters before he is born. The almost managed, and New Age does it part in it. But whom than will rebel against that what now is ruling the world by what we see over the Media?

What Gandhoo what’s to do different, instead of making people aware of their true self?

    • Lokesh says:

Preetam, when friends and people rattle on to be about their true self I usually ask them what they acually mean by that. Nine times out of ten they become confused and, if they have the guts, admit that they do not actally know what they are talking about.
I’ve no idea what category you fall into, but if I hazard a guess I’d say you are in the 90%..not that it is any of my business. I come to this conclussion because of your obsession with conspiracies. That’s kid’s and stoner’s stuff. Anyone in touch with their real self will tell you that none of that matters.

      • Preetam says:

Perhaps you are wrong with your fiction about self realizing. Such person maybe tells the truth, but that would be rebellion in the eyes of a repressor. Is there already the beginning of a conspiracy against whom, the ruler or against truth?

        • Lokesh says:

I haven’t met any repressors lately. Therefore I can’t answer your question. I don’t feel at all repressed.

          • Preetam says:

Perhaps no more aware of the repressors; it’s already such common, asking is inconvenient. For example, using electricity from our wall outlet is the acceptance and use of a repressed truth (as far Tesla concern); which keeps Humanity dependent onto the establishment and under material pressure.

Soon the Internet will be controlled by the countries and watch your writings. But people are desensitizing for Truth, Health and Freedom, even it matters the own life.

    • bodhi vartan says:

What Gandhoo what’s to do different, instead of making people aware of their true self?

As it has been proven, rebellion does not work, for many reasons, if even for the mere point that they kill our leaders (Martin Luther King, Lennon, Kennedy, perhaps even Osho). Today it’s time to go with the flow, be in it but not of it.

There is a subtle difference between a perhaps rebellious individual and the rebellion of a Mob. Perhaps a person of truth is never a rebellion, how can he. What makes him an Rebel are the lies of the common stupidity.

Maybe you cannot work it out. Since Osho left his body he has melted into his sannyasins. We all have a piece of him and the more of us that are together the more of Him we have. You might not like my piece, and I might not like your piece and Ma Deva Coconut might not like the Resort’s piece … but somehow he (Osho) was managing to hold all these pieces together and he was doing that with … love. Because love is not when we are looking in each other’s eyes but when we are looking in the same direction.

someone has ventured myth to be…

“a complex of ideas/stories,some no doubt true, some fantasy/fiction,which for various reasons, human beings regard as demonstrations of the inner meaning of the universe and of human life…..”

osho certainly pulled that off in his life.
yet,it is self-evident that HE himself was the above-mentioned “demonstration”,and without his live presence, you simply have to create a different myth altogether.
even if you attempt to base it on his life.

in the present,i dont really see osho as a myth.
i see him more as a dreaming.
my view is that his last words were really.
    *i leave you my dreaming…”

I think you’ve got it there in a nutshell. If I were to point a finger at one individual on the global stage, I would say Slavoj Zizek (somebody I mentioned before). He has enough persona and individuality and he talks about roughly the right things. More politics than spirituality but there is enough spirituality on the fringe. But I am not promoting him as I am too busy pointing at the moon. One dead Osho is worth 50 live Zizeks.

You also correct that ppl are reverting to traditional systems. More Jesus than Church. The ‘abstract historical’ rather than ‘living proof’. This is indeed something to be considered.

  14. shantam prem says:

“You are still worshiping the finger that is pointing at the moon…”
Such sentences lose all the significance, all the grace, all the charm when used randomly by abc or xyz!

    • Lokesh says:

Shantam, that is a matter of opinion. I don’t agree. You can remove the metaphor and in this case say the following.
Osho pointed out much that was significant. People, rather than checking out what Osho was indicating, began to worship the man for pointing important things out to them, which amounts to nothing more than a personality cult. This is ridiculous, especially in Osho’s case, because what was being shown was something beyond personality.
You can see how it happened, of course, Osho was a charming chap, who somehow managed to encapsulate many people’s dream of what a saviour might look like. This brings into question why we imagine that we need someone to save us and from what? Falling victim of a personality cult?

  15. prem martyn says:

I was told recently of the untimely death of an european centre leader , after vigorous exercise. Someone I had known. He was a rampant carnivore. Not an issue in itself for others to reflect upon, necessarily in itself, what he did with his gob. Salivary glands do not of themselves a decent person make whether carrot oriented or not.
Were that it was so easy.

What is illuminatng is that this centre leader’s bi-polar duality between empathic huggy wuggy ness, and indolent casual violence, his ambitions for promoting his borrowed religious identity and the confirmation it bestowed, whilst being utterly unresponsive to the misery of other beings plight. His sponsoring of the same ( his supposedly also osho-oriented son -in law inherited a meat packing factory, without noticing the schizophrenia this entailed ) ended in cholesterolic premature death.
Whilst death in and of itself is not a solution for anyone or anything in the problem solving of ideas, i remark on this story as evidence of the various streams of permanent hypocrisy, between values and identity which sannyasins have extreme difficulty in negotiating.

We are not muslim sufis, nor are we nepalese proto god worshipper slaughterers..we (most of us) go ‘yukk’ when we see this inflicted misery, as a natural humane response…, and we rail at the hypocrisy of the world. But those who post here , virtually , do it in the freedom that there is no accountability for their opinions. None. No implications, no accountability, other than perhaps a modicum of moderation. Their/our net effect on the sannyas world is also stuck at somewhere near an aspirational zero, including my own.

so why do we write…in my case because it passes the time and for wont of a realistic immersion back into that which I turned my back on ..communal caring and sharing….I am stuck in a kind of bloggers purgatory ….

what has all this to do with conscienable acts…acts and measures of our faith and response to anything unhypocrital and truthful… and more importantly fun….
well the great sin for osho was egoic behavour that didn’t receive commune sanctioning ..all mannner of apparently negative ego-separation was blasted to conjoin us.
Osho and our own sanctified urges represent much of what we wish for ourselves, in another..ie Him, dead or remembered is representative of THAT,….but ……it’s not work out-able as a grand plan… that’s what I have come to realise, because, well people en masse are particularly unrelaible..never mind the internal hypocrisies. Thats why I oppose its formulaic misrepresentations by way of coloured robes and generated proto -self belief by way of collective hugs.

And so with my finger on that particular buzzer of hypocrisy i return to the issue of dying, not so much from carnivorism but the schizophrenic hypocrisy in osho quoters/aspirers that it represents. We don’t recommend violent acts or acts of bloodletting amongst each other… how then can the same hand lend itself to that very same intention , and act elsewhere.

Remember we are not muslim sufis or back woods survivalists, at least the known part of Osho’s world isn’t,…we originate in spirit and fact from the veggy indian tradition….. and that my earnest ones is enough for today.oh yes and a very veggy xmas to you all.

PS As its DECEMBER the 18th I intuitively am reminded and knew I had to post something about this man………

    that
Vaclav Havel wasn’t a veggy but he was certainly more capable of leaving some great dignified reflections for us all to creatively use about abuse and power and truth between us all… and this is my nodding commemoration of his passing last year.

If it wasn’t for Havel and the Czech society he brought about and nourished we would all be still singing ‘pie in the sky when we die’ for lack of a relative accessible living example of what inspired living through fun and commitment can collectively do in the world not separate from it…..a la osho…

(maybe someone can translate the german in this clip.. stay with it as Lou Reed talks)

I suspect that you are just parroting the expression ‘evolution of spirituality’. Sounds good and millions have went for it, but the point I’d like to make is that the truth is already here, always has been, always will be. People like you don’t want to see that. It is too simple for your mind to comprehend. You need maps, systems, complicated concepts and so it happens that if you feel it is not there, you will never realize it.

clinical evolution of brainless people using the daily mail for brain-mapping and having ego-donor cards for the advancement of science and spiritual evolution of multiple divorce cases are of great significance to those with multiple delusions.
i am surely willing to have contents of chuddies measured for scientifc evolution and estimate damage of ego organ being stuck in swiss/german venus fly trap since pumping phase(88-90)and trying to find oshos vision in german social security office.
egoless greats are having yardstick,in comparison, spiritual evolution of my vital organ is more like toothpick!

Frank, I don´t know, whether you have filled the organ donar card.
May be you can offer your brain post death for clinical study.
How come a white British man spends his productive years behind a man from central India? Where ever that man went, you followed.
    There must be something unusual!

At large, quite a fanatic interest of Humanity in Archetypes, Myths and Fictions. Perhaps an effort of entire Humanity, maybe interest of a few who gather authorities from it, is nourishing Myths and Fictions in an almost fanatic way.

    • frank says:

      preetam,
at large, what you say has smell of truth.if the rebellious members of the mob controlled by the authorities opposed to the rebellious mob of individuals who contact their true self can be lied to by the “few”,then archetypes of freemasons who invent myths fictions and lies for the masses can be manipulated in an almost fanatic way by the rebel who is a common stupidity of the entire humanity.

  25. prem martyn says:

It’s at times like this when we are all focusing on the same heart space via the internet, sitting privately in contemplative awe, fully reclaiming that which is perhaps casually frittered away in temporal exixtence without any prospect of re-imbursement or indemnity or a quick pit stop spiritual re-fuel with a free gift of a nice set of cut glass tumblers , that we can truly say…..with a tear in the recollecting eye…..

I wonder if I can take it with me when I go……

or leave it to someone who can use it, and enjoy, and love well….

    Just a thought……

Worship to me, becomes “real” worship not before one realized the true self. Worship in it is moving the mechanics of the true self through Love, either moving us beyond Body. Thus worship is the highest Yoga if practiced within the Self, the real Labour.

    Christmas Poem
    *************

    Evening swim
    in empty, heated village pool,
300 village souls not swimming tonight.

    Walking back with Cathar girl
    through Alpine village moonlit night,
    snow
    twinkley lights
    adorning windows,
    frosted trees and 18th century spired-church .

    Bells gently tinkle
    Silent Night
    tunes on the hour
    through each day
    on its shimmering campanile.

    I then wondered
    what I should write here
    which would be
    momentously endearing
    to this season’s
    audience
    of SnOwSHOes News….

    I’m wondering
    if I may have already
    done
    just that.
