A reader asked a while back about the Pune one sannyasin, Swami Vedanta who used to live in Tallywaddy Rd and who bought the ashram a jeep in 1976, only to steal it back the same year.
Osho liked him, or appeared to like him. The rumour was Osho actually gave Vedanta permission to take the jeep, but Laxmi hated the decision. Anyway when it was ”stolen” she informed the police.
Osho referred to it as below in the Ancient Music in the Pines series of talks. He may have referred to it in other places but I could not find anything readily. I dont know what happend to Vedanta or whether he is still alive. Osho did not think he was a very good thief as detailed below, but, yes, he did appear to like him.
”If a burglar is going to follow Aristotle he will be caught sooner or later because the same
Aristotelian logic is followed by the police. Just few days before, Vedanta did a beautiful
thing: he escaped with the ashram jeep. Of course the police had to be informed.
Everybody was expecting that he would go towards Chanda, because he had been saying
that he wanted to go to Chanda and re-open an old ashram which used to be there –
Kailash. Had he gone towards there the police may not have follow, but the police were
thinking logically and they said, ’If he had been saying that he was going towards Chanda
he will not go to Chanda now because he will be afraid he will be caught on that road. He
is not going there.’ So they were not worried about that road and, of course, Vedanta was caught in Lonavalla. He was going towards Bombay. But the police also followed the same logic.
If you go through logic, then anybody who follows the logical method can catch you anywhere”
Anyone know anything more about what happened to Vedanta?.
Thanks Roman. Yes I knew the guy also, as he lived next door to me for a while in Tallywaddy Road, before getting thrown out for defaulting on his rent. It would be good to get the lecture in which Osho asks those criticising him to leave, and that he (Osho) will work with the ”thief”, maybe Arpana can find the reference, he seems good at that.
