This is start of my blog, where I am going to write about how spirituality and Osho’s techings can be brought in main stream science, some mis-conceptions of scientists and my journey with Osho. I am a PhD researcher and a scientist, I someday I wish to prove that enlightenment is not a philosophy but a phenomenon important to be studied in mainstream science.
Please go through my first post and let me know about my english skills and redability and also comment if you like the article.spiritual atheist | Notes on the QuestA year back I had stumbled upon and read the book Science v/s Spirituality, it is a good read and the special thing about it is it isn’t Science v/s Religion, which is the often debated topic. Here it says ‘Spirituality’ which as I have come to understand is more closer to experiencing God than the current Religions.
bodhisagar,
i appresiciate your efforts to argue with richard dawkins but it wont work.
he will (and does)simply answer that your assumption that consciousness cannot be measured is a non-scientific assumption that will come eventually to be misproved,in the same way as people once said humans could not fly or they would never find out how to clone animals.
my mate dave, the quantum mechanic, and real pragmatist when it comes to philosophy`s finer points, came up with a much better way to teach dawkins about consciousness.he suggested sticking his head down a toilet, flushing it a few times.
Hi Frank,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I agree its an almost impossible task, but lets see, I am on my path to become a scientist in UK and I am researching in field of Cybernetics, in UK. So I pretty much have my whole life, to give it a long shot. Its not only about Richard Dawkins but there are even some of conference on Consciousness which completely ignore the fact that it has to be experienced through Meditation. I hope to document my progress through this blog, in a way to share the ideas with sannyasins.
Also, any way, I only hope that, I would experience the divine blessed state someday. And if at all, I feel, there has to be a way to throw light on Enlightenment from a yet not attempted perspective of Science.
bodhisagar,
i`m no scientist.in fact, actually i thought cybernetics was something to to with sci-fi robot super heroes.
but i read that gordon pask defined it as::
”the art and science of manipulating defensible metaphors.”
but what could serve as a metaphor for conscciousness?
thats a difficult one.
if something encompasses everything then what could be the metaphor for that?
i`m afraid that not even shantam will be able to manage that!
then again,he might.
”consciousness is a huge pair of mangoes floating in free space.”
could be as good as any attempt….
(good luck anyway)
Frank,
Cybernetics is study of all the processes you see around, from the systems engineering point of view, i.e. forming mathematical models of every thing you see around. The study ranges for human brain and its neurons, robots, to modelling of weather and human population dynamics.
Consciousness, obviously can’t fall under its realm as it can’t be measured and thereby a mathematical model can’t be formed. (it is best described by negating everything as in Nirvana Shatakam, by adi sankara)
There is a school of thought in Cybernetics, under Artificial Life, called ’Theory of Emergence’, which believe that human consciousness is product of brain neurons interacting with each other at lower level. (my article on this : http://nccastaff.bournemouth.ac.uk/psalunkhe/Emergence%20Article.html)
However, as you know a completely different understanding exists in spiritual world.
Many other fields like Robotics, have became enough complex where they have reached at the point where we ask can the machine ever be conscious. I feel, some day or other there will be a breakthrough in science as the systems will grow enough complex, leading us to understand its true nature, that it can’t be understood but can be experienced.
However these are just my thoughts.
Cheers,
Bodhisagar.
