Although it was originally set up and organised at the last minute by travellers, because Avon and Somerset Police tried to end the annual Avon Free Festival, which had been held in the Bristol area around the May Bank Holiday for several years. As a result, hundreds of travellers en route to the area for the expected festival were shunted into neighbouring counties by Avon and Somerset’s ‘Operation Nomad’ .

they had made a last minute choice to move to the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire to Castelmorton Common , expecting a festival of perhaps no more than 600 people, unexpectedly 20,000 – 40,000 people turned up, mostly young ravers, attracted by an answerphone message giving away the location of the party and word of mouth , as well as tv news reports of a massive free party and a large collection of hippies.

Many of the large sound systems of the time where there such as Bedlam, Circus Warp, Spiral Tribe and DiY Sound System, and bands such as Back To The Planet.

This massive mother of all raves which lasted for days led to the Tory goverment of the time bringing out some draconian legislation, the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, effectively making large outdoor free raves and festivals illegal, especially where a group of more than twelve vehicles were gathered.

There were reports of a very good time and a positive vibe by the revellers who attended the party, which began during a sunny May bank holiday weekend and lasted a week, but it was the travellers who had originally organised the event, not expecting such a large gathering, who were left to clean up the mess – and who largely took the blame.

Thirteen members of the Spiral Tribe sound system who were also involved in organisation were arrested after the event, and charged with public order offences. But after a lengthy and costly trial, they were acquitted.

Tory government’s since Thatcher have always hated the idea of people having a good time for free.
