I do not know about Shantam’s particular case but many immigrants who come to the west do not come there for social security handouts and welfare checks but to make a better life for themselves and their familites as productive, independent people.

Shantaram is a good novel that depicts modern-day India as it is…a dump full of corrupt people with Sanskrit names.
