How Albert Camus found solace in the absurdity of football
The French philosopher proclaimed that the only way to live was to revolt relentlessly against meaninglessness. So why did he love such a ridiculous game, asks MM Owen
Interesting article, Arps.
Why did he love sich a ridiculous game?
Because much is hidden in it.
Interesting that football, like all two team competitive sports, also develops cooperation among the players, with their own team members.
Yes, sometimes you win as a team, sometimes you lose as a team. Also good for sharing emotions.
Belonging to such a team can be very useful ’therapy’. Your life might be in raggedy bits but come the match you can rise to the occasion and feel good about yourself and good about being part of something. The physical well-being helps as well.
t`s got too serious, tho` with all the money, the cheating, win at all costs and the free ticket to laundering their souls for every dodgy businessman/regime under the sun
It`s absurd.
But not absurd enough..
Sometimes Frank, I hear a wistful melancholia, creep into your voice when you talk about the beautiful game.
Yes, very good for bonding…
It’s like you share same team experience over a while and in a way you start to think of the others as football players first, rather than as individual people with a more important life ’outside’. (Of course, some of them don’t have such a life – never me, of course, oh no!).
Camus was a goalkeeper, I believe. Also a bit of a writer, apparently….
