If you hold or attach to anything (e.g. cling to an opinion), you’ll bump up against other people who e.g. hold different opinions. The result will be conflict. This conflict is instructive, as it alerts you to the fact that you’re attached to something. If you avoid or deny conflict, then you have no bullshit detector: you’ll be able to cling to an opinion your whole life, without even knowing it.

Buddha’s essential teaching points to the truth that’s already appeared, right in front of you. To add concepts of “mindfulness” or “realization” is an insult. Even to add “Buddha” to it is an insult.

Buddha holding up a flower points at something that you can see for yourself. That’s why the story is still used, centuries later, as a teaching device. If you think what it points to is limited to an interchange with Mahakashyapa so many centuries ago… then you miss the essence of the teaching that’s been transmitted to this very moment.

Hence, around your early 50′s, with a sense that ‘time’s running out’, you’re in despair, consciously or otherwise, and so resorting to these obvious psychic defences to help you somehow feel better about yourself and about life.
