Did you notice that Mount Krakatoa in Indonesia is erupting? It’s pretty big but not truly humongous as eruptions go. There’s ash being deposited 10 km away, a plume 40,000 feet high, and there’s a significant impact on commercial flights in the region.

Zabriski is hired to wash the windows of an eighteen-storey building.
When he arrives at the job, he finds Paddy and Sean there to help him. The three of them climb the scaffolding to the top of the building and start to work. But after an hour passes, suddenly Zabriski climbs over the scaffolding and jumps eighteen stories to the street below.
The police arrive, and one of the officers asks Paddy and Sean what happened.
”I don’t know,” says Sean.
”Well,” says Paddy, ”maybe it was because of his deformity.”
”What do you mean?” asks the cop.
”Well,” says Paddy, ”he kept on saying that he couldn’t work with two assholes.”

During army camouflage, private Paddy Murphy, disguised as a tree trunk, makes a sudden move and is spotted by the general.
”You idiot!” yells the officer. ”You are supposed to be a tree. Jumping and screaming like that, you could endanger the lives of the whole platoon.”
”Yes, sir,” replies Paddy. ”But sir, I must tell you, I stood quite still when some pigeons used me for target practice. And I never moved when three dogs thought I was a latrine. But I could not bear it when two squirrels ran up the leg of my pants and I heard one of them say, “Let’s eat one now and save the other until winter.”

Comfort and happiness then seem to be the things people are always striving for, and misery, guilt, sinfulness are what religions rely upon to motivate man to do the priests’ bidding. Religions promise you things in the afterlife, beyond death, in return for your following them in this life. It seems like a poor bargain.

It seems to me that nothing that mankind does is truly perfect. You can tell a small child, two parallel lines never meet, but in practice can any man draw two perfectly parallel lines? In the same way, many of the things we think about do not truly exist. Justice is another such ideal, which seems perfect but is in practicality forever out of reach.

These ideas of perfection are like attractors in the mind, taking up space which could be used for developing a better understanding of that which is. That way you would be less in thrall to ideas which are in fact only shadows.

A good laugh is also a moment of no-mind, which is why it is difficult to see your own state of being. Afterwards it tends to be quickly forgotten, except if you yourself look at the memory and keep it alive.

A good laugh brings pure joy, sheer dance, a delighted playfulness. It is an overflowing of energy, connectedness with a realm of pleasure and joy. My mothers’ sniff of Parmesan cheese had me in tears of laughter.

I was thinking a little on the nature of laughter. Osho said that laughter was never acknowledged as a spiritual device because it gives you a glimpse of what it is like to be a buddha, and the many religions are against people getting such glimpses.

I think it’s quite true, a really good laugh does provide a glimpse of an extraordinary state of lightness of being. It’s difficult to examine while laughing, but immediately afterward you can look at the memory of what you experienced, and get some idea of how awe-inspiring it is.
