“This is a book that proclaims that enlightenment is a sudden, immediate and energetic insight that is constantly available. It is the open secret that reveals itself in every part of our lives. No effort, purification path, method or teaching of any kind can bring you there. Because the open secret has nothing to do with an effort to change your way of life. It is about the renewed discovery of what it is that lives.

No idea or system of ideas can express what enlightenment is. Attempts to share through words the rediscovery and the miracle of what we are is just as pointless as writing a recipe for plumpudding and then expecting someone who reads it to be able to taste it.”

( Tony Parsons, ‘The Open Secret’ )

Just wanted to mention this as the most sensible thing I’ve read about enlightenment in a while. I think most people have an impression of what belongs with these words.

Anyway, enough of that old stuff, it just disturbs the peace.

In a way, life is always moving and transforming. We humans are no exception — even when we sit still in meditation, subtly we are growing older. With open eyes, we can find joy everywhere: a flower going from bud to bloom, the gravel of a Zen garden windswept or freshly raked, a passing magpie in juvenile molt, a butterfly.

In non-resistance to life’s many transformations, we find acceptance and peace in the here-now. The mind becomes tranquil, contemplative, writing a few words here and there… we descend down towards a deeper state of being, where there is no seeing and consciousness takes on a different flavour.

I don’t know if I ever posted this here, but I stored it at the time I came across it and thought this was a very much on-point segment about Osho’s desire for autocratic control.

The following was an answer by Osho in Poona One regarding a question from a woman who was distressed to see an Indian devotee turned away at the Ashram gate, who wondered if it was not her business to express her feelings about it:

“This is significant for everybody present here, and anybody who is going in any way to be related to me. Whatsoever happens in this commune happens according to me…

This you have to understand absolutely that whatsoever happens here - I may not come out of my room. I never come except in the morning and in the evening, and I never go around the ashram, but whatever happens here is perfectly known to me, is happening according to me. Please don’t interfere…

You are nobody to judge what is right and what is wrong. If you know it already, you are not needed here. You have become enlightened - go home.
This is none of your business - to decide what is just and what is unjust. This is no ordinary place, so ordinary things don’t apply here. Some extraordinary experiment is on. I know what is somebody’s need. If I feel that somebody has to be rejected from the gate, he has to be rejected. If I feel that no reason has to be given, then no reason has to be given. That’s my device for his life and his work…

You are nobody here to decide what should be and what should not be. The moment you become part of my commune you leave everything to me…
There are some foolish people who have renounced their sannyas because they saw something unjust being done. Now they’re just losing their opportunity. It was not their business; you have come here for your own growth. This acceptance has to be total - only then is work possible, only then I can help you. Please don’t give suggestions to me…

This is not going to be a democracy. You are not to be asked what should be done and what should not be done. This should be remembered from the very beginning - that this is not going to be a democracy. Your vote will never be taken. You become part of it with that knowledge - that whatsoever I decide is absolute.”

( Osho, ‘The Diamond Sutra’ )

If whatever happens in the ashram is known to him, and happens according to him, then that also applies to Sheela and her gang, and to the abuse at the Ranch. In Sheela’s case he very publicly denounced her and her actions later on, and we never got to hear his thoughts about the abuse cases.
